Lenore Skenazy called down a firestorm of controversy when she wrote a newspaper column about letting her nine-year-old ride alone on the New York City subway. In this plainspoken take on modern parenting, Skenazy offers a commonsense approach to letting kids be kids.

Fun, but rather slow
Revisado: 03-25-25
There was so much of this book spent on wizard school work that I feel like I’ve personally attended and perhaps graduated the magical university.
It’s a fun concept, and funny at times, but at least twice as long as it should be. I listened at more than double speed and still felt like it dragged on at times. I see it’s a ten book series, but based on the first novel, that likely means it should be about 3-4 books instead of 10.

Apart from the odd prejudice against “rich white men”, haha,
it was a fun book. It had some creative twists and it does good at keeping you guessing who the killer is.

Historia
Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was 23 and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age 38. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations.

Written as one who admires Joseph smith but doesn’t believe him
Revisado: 10-18-23
Often people idolize prophets so much, particularly Joseph smith, that when they learn some history that illustrates him as a flawed man instead of a perfect messenger of God, it makes them lose faith. This author tries to combat that but goes way beyond the mark. He often paints Joseph so much as a flawed man and revelations as just being circumstantial instead of revelatory that the author comes across as one who admires what Joseph accomplished but doesn’t believe any of it came from God. For example he never refers to the restoration as coming from Christ or God or revelation and instead constantly calls it Joseph’s church or Joseph’s religion.
Some readers will benefit from this book but I worry that those without strong solidified testimonies already in place will leave feeling their faith is attacked or reduced instead of strengthened. It reads as far more critical of events than understanding or explaining them, let alone showing the spirituality of them.

Historia
To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. 6Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide listeners through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God.

1st half is great
Revisado: 04-06-23
1st half is great- really hits on a ton of scientific evidence for creation, the Bible, etc.
2nd half is mostly repetitions of “my Christianity is right and everyone else’s is wrong”… which I don’t blame them for having- if you believe something, you better believe it full-heartedly, but there are glaring holes in these preachings, and it isn’t what I was expecting based on the title. 1 half was what I expected and was excellently done- second half was a real struggle to get through.

Too slow pace and too many F-bombs
Revisado: 10-04-22
Nearly every chapter ends just hearing about the mc going home after work and drinking beer. Makes the pacing slow.
An occasional swear word is bearable when it’s purpose is to add emphasis. When they’re this frequent it’s just lazy writing. Comes across as lazy, crass, unimaginative. Can you really not come up with any other way to paint the picture than drop 80 f words? If you can’t, you’re doing it wrong!

Everyone has secrets, and Rachel Holloway is no exception. She’s worked hard to keep the past where it belongs: dead and buried. And so far, she’s been very successful. But now the small newspaper where she works wants to produce a podcast on a cold case: the disappearance 12 years ago of young Molly Forster. Some secrets should never see the light of day, and, as far as Rachel is concerned, whatever happened to little Molly is one of them.

Filthy language, average story
Revisado: 09-15-22
There’s probably 100+ f-words in this. Swearing should only ever be used extremely sparingly, to add emphasis- excessive language is a sign of poor or lazy writing, they become filler words, distracting from the story you should be painting. Story is average- the promised twists and turns did not live up to the hype. It was a clever idea for a story, but was unfortunately not as flushed out as it should have been and was almost unbearable to sit through so much filler language garbage.
