Historia
For much of his 30s, Jesse Bering thought he was probably going to kill himself. He was a successful psychologist and writer, but the impulse to take his own life remained. At times it felt all but inescapable. Bering survived. And in addition to relief, the fading of his suicidal thoughts brought curiosity and questions. In Suicidal, Bering takes us through the science and psychology of suicide, revealing its cognitive secrets and the subtle tricks our minds play on us when we're easy emotional prey.

A book about suicide where the author talks very little about suicide.

Much of this book is academic, self important prattle. If you want to know about suicide REID Kay Redfield Jamison's book Night Falls Fast.

I love a good cuss word if it's well placed but she's dropping F bombs just to show how badass she is and it really get in the way of processing what otherwise might be decent information. Also, this is entirely the wrong narrator for this book full of vulgar words. It was like listening to my second grade teacher say fuck fuck fuck. I had to quit after 10 minutes.

The statistics on suicide are staggering. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 800,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every forty seconds, and for each completed suicide there may be twenty or more attempts. In How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me, Susan Blauner is the perfect emissary for a message of hope and a program of action for these millions of people.

Historia
It was a crime that shocked the nation: the brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were intellectuals - too smart, they believed, for the police to catch them. When they were apprehended, state's attorney Robert Crowe was certain that no defense could save the ruthless killers from the gallows.

Fabulous story but awful narration
Revisado: 03-18-22
This narrator’s clipped melodramatic style is simply awful. The book is very well written and the story is fascinating so I really wanted to listen to this on audiobooks. But several times I almost deleted the book from my library because the narrator is so bad.

I don’t understand how someone who frequently miss pronounce his words and has an irritatingly nasal voice can be allowed to present an audiobook. His prosody is so limited I found myself losing focus and nodding off. Excellent content, intolerable presentation.

Awful
Revisado: 06-10-21
I am an aphasiologist with 30 years experience. This book gets it wrong in the very first sentence when it refers to aphasia as a speech disorder instead of a language disorder. I didn’t make it much farther before closing this book in contempt.
