Fantastic
Revisado: 02-07-25
OMG! This book is so good! If I'd been able to I would have listened start to finish in one setting. The story, the characters, the pacing, the emotions were perfect! I've always loved Julia Whelan as a narrator, and she was stellar as usual. I will definitely be looking for her next book as an author and continue to seek her out as a narrator.

Story good, narrator not
Revisado: 04-06-24
This was a fun, predictable romance with good characters. The narrator's breathiness and slow speech drove me crazy but I wanted to listen to the story. I could stand her at 1.2 X speed.

Historia
Wen Alder was born into two worlds. On his father’s side, a legacy of proud loyalty and service to the god-like Sienese Emperor spanning generations. And it is expected that Alder, too, will follow this tradition by passing the imperial exams, learning the accepted ways of magic and, if he serves with honor, enhancing his family's prominence by rising to take a most powerful position in Sien—the Hand of the Emperor. But from his mother he has inherited defiance from the Empire, a history of wild gods and magic unlike anything the Imperial sorcerers could yet control.

I guess I felt differently
Revisado: 08-16-23
I got this book because it sounded like a great story and there were so many outstanding reviews. I just didn't like it. It started out well, but the main character turned out to be kind of an arrogant git. The narration just droned on and on. I kept thinking "this narrator needs some Prozac". When I got to part 3 and he slowed down even more and got even more monotone and quiet I couldn't take it anymore. The story was just not interesting enough for me to slog through the narration.

Meh
Revisado: 12-11-22
I don't get all the other good reviews. The narrator is decent, except that when the characters are droning on with thoughts as an information dump, she tends to drone on as well. I listened for almost 10 hours thinking that it was going to get better, but it never did. The story just didn't seem to go anywhere. The characters are flat, with no development within the story or themselves. The few sex scenes seemed inserted because the author thought they should go there and don't really add to the story or, again, to character development. The hatred and violence weren't disturbing so much as just repetitive and gratuitous. I realized that I was just bored and was having to talk myself into listening for a little bit more to hope something different happened. I finally returned it to spend my credit on something that I will actually enjoy.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

just a great story and Ray Porter!
Revisado: 11-04-22
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book and was skeptical when iI started it. But this is a great story! It' was hard to stop listening. Yes there's a lot of science but no information dumps or droning on. (If science generally bores you, stsy away). But OMG it's mostly about the power of feelings, communication and friendship. It was fun, funny, serious, sad, maddening, heart breaking and heart warming.
Ray Porter is one of my favorite narrators and this was up to his typical wonderful performance. standard .

This was basically a woman complaining. The complaining got more and more bitter as the "story" went on. After about 22 minutes hoping it would get better it never did so I stopped listening.

Historia
On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest's lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say - and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return.

Terrible story, writing, characters
Revisado: 02-03-22
I gave this book a chance, thinking that often it takes a while for a story to develop. However, after 2.5 hours I couldn't stand it anymore. The story and the words are repetitive, inane. I found nothing to like about any of the characters. I gave up and am returning the book.

Boring!
Revisado: 11-21-21
Even Ray Porter's narration couldn't save this book. I kept going back to it, thinking it would get better but it never did. The characters are shallow, the story predictable and so far from original I don't even have a word for it. I returned the book.

Couldn't keep going
Revisado: 08-07-21
I made it 3/4 of the way through part one of the cycle then just couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to give it a chance to get better but it never did. The story alternates between long, drawn out "history" or descriptions and terrible dialog. I think the character interaction is supposed to be light, comedic banter, but it ends up being just bickering that never changes. The long background/descriptive parts often don't turn out to be relevant. a lot of it feels like filler, but I found myself relived to not have to listen to dialog.
The main characters don't develop at all. They don't learn from their mistakes. They meet teachers who don't teach them or they ignore it when they do. They don't recognize skills that would help them.
I just couldn't imagine listening to hours more of the same.
The narrator just magnifies everything.

Maybe It's just me
Revisado: 10-17-16
I really tried to like this book. I went back and read other reviews and summaries and tried again but I just found myself actually avoiding listening to books because this one was up next in line. The narrator is excellent but I just couldn't get into the stalker story. Maybe I'm too old but the characters seemed pathetic and sick to me. I have other books that I want to listen to so I'm giving up on this one.
