Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

The most satisfying book I’ve read in a long while
Revisado: 08-20-19
I rarely give a five star review. A good book usually gets four. A good enough book gets three. Meh gets one or two. Ms. Harmon Is a far more skillful writer than anyone I’ve read in at least the last two years. Her book read comfortably, but her word choice astonished me. The various accents of the audiobook performers were appropriate, well done, and utterly believable. Ms. Harmon taught me history I hadn’t known, in the most natural way possible, and left me understanding the world a little better. I expected the last half of the book to go one of two ways, both very formulaic, but the author surprised me, leaving this reader deeply sated and utterly satisfied. You have earned the rare fifth star. Thank you, Amy Harmon!

A favorite

Just finished my second time through. So glad it’s now on Audible. Will enjoy it again, I am sure.
I wish she didn’t take God’s name in vain so much. That detracts from the story for me. Otherwise, I’ve loved it.

Fun and interesting exploration of “what if”
Revisado: 08-07-18
Fun and interesting exploration of “what if” a small, key battle had gone differently in History? Sarah Woodbury ties together modern day with a time period and country most of us never think about, but one battle with very few people— an ambush, really—could have changed that forever for us all.
I’ve shared this book with half a dozen others who, like me, have grabbed up the sequel as well.

Historia
Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. But what if we could regain some of our lost evolutionary strength by simulating the environmental conditions of our forbears? Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology?

Historia
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio introduces Evelyn Ryan, an enterprising woman who kept poverty at bay with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the "contest era" of the 1950s and 1960s. Standing up to the church, her alcoholic husband, and antiquated ideas about women, Evelyn turned every financial challenge into an opportunity for innovation, all the while raising her six sons and four daughters with the belief that miracles are an everyday occurrence.

Encouraging, inspiring, worth reading and rereading
Revisado: 05-08-17
Among the other books I read, there are a few I come back to again and again. _The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio_ is a favorite companion whose company I enjoy spending time with once again every two or three years.
Evelyn Ryan, the author's mother, lived with extraordinarily difficult circumstances, yet lived a a joyful, hardworking, faith filled, celebratory life, teaching and inspiring her children-- and her story's readers --that God is faithful, that strength, dignity, and joy are a choice, and life is what you make of it.
The author's parents both saw the loss of their dreams. One turned to alcohol and wasted his life. The other chose to pivot, redirect and refocus in a different but related direction, making a good life for herself.
The author's father was an angry alcoholic, yet his wife found a way to help each of their ten children grasp and embrace that their father's choices and their external circumstances did not have to define their lives, that they, themselves, had the power and freedom to define their own lives, just as their mother had, with wisdom, wit, determination and joy.
Terry Ryan's book is a keeper, one I intend to read and reread over the years. I still have some lessons to learn from her.
