An expected detour never happened
Revisado: 03-13-25
This was a nice Pygmalion-like story and overall I enjoyed it. I don't often leave reviews but one point has been niggling at me. Not really a spoiler, but in case you're worried, stop reading now...
There were many, many references to the protagonist using alcohol as a coping mechanism. So many that halfway through, I thought facing her alcohol abuse/dependency was going to be a plot point. But it never happened. Which just left me feeling like the book normalized alcohol abuse. I know most readers won't care or maybe even notice, but...it was a bit of a turnoff for me.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

A bit disappointing
Revisado: 11-27-24
It was lovely to spend time with beloved characters, but the plot of this book lacked the suspense and excitement of the first three. It was a bit rambling and just not as engaging. I was also a bit put off by one of the characters suddenly becoming a bit of a threat.
The reader's performance was good overall, but her pronunciation of certain words (clapboard) drove me a bit nuts. And why does she say "Griselda" that way? Lol.
Anyway, the book was fine, but sometimes knowing when to stop is a strength.

Jess imagines sun, sand, wine and safaris. And returning to London with an ethically mined diamond on her left hand... But this holiday isn’t set to be quite the fairy tale Jess has planned. Insufferable protagonist
Revisado: 08-26-24
I know we are supposed to find the protagonist funny and charming, but she has the intellect of a three-year-old. She's annoying. I couldn't finish it.

"This has gone on too long."
Revisado: 03-31-24
This story dragged. Nobody listens to each other, the characters draw nonsensical conclusions, and given what the plot is, they all lack any sense of urgency. At one point I thought the conclusion was nearing only to see there was still two hours of running time left. The sentence "this has gone on too long" was uttered more than once, and was absolutely true. A plethora of red herrings did not make the ending particularly surprising, either.

My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 12-14-23
This is the third or forth book by this author that I've listened to, and it's...okay. Maybe slightly better than okay, for the genre, but I can't get past the reader's performance. On one hand, her voices are astonishingly good, but... The protagonist is BEYOND ANNOYING. Nonstop shouting and whining that is grating to listen to and puts me totally on edge. And petty, perhaps, but the author has used the word "infer" when she means "imply" in ALL THREE of the books I have listened to recently. I am guessing they don't have an editor? Anyway, just little annoyances. Other books by the author have been more enjoyable.

Lieutenant Lorraine Page once had everything - a devoted husband, two beautiful daughters and an impressive career with the Homicide Squad. But Lorraine Page is about to be brought right back into that world again....

Terrible Reader
Revisado: 11-15-21
The story was fine, but the reader was distractingly bad. Every character except the protagonist sounded like a 1920s cartoon gangster or Blanche Du Bois. Bizarre and ultimately annoying. The author also uses the odd Britishism (I believe she is British) like "18 stone," "row," or going to "get a curry" that sounds discordant in a book set among LA cops . Anyway, I am glad this one was included or I would definitely be returning it.

Revisado: 09-08-21
I rarely write reviews, but this was just so bad it actually infuriated me. I don't know if I have ever disliked a main character more. She's an insipid, self-centered moron. The plot makes no sense, as I can't imagine anyone wanting to be in a room with her for more than 30 seconds. I only finished it because I was listening on a train and had no other options. The reader did well with the material she had to work with.

The implausible premise that police treat an unexpected death as a crime "until proven otherwise" sets up a weak plot. The red herrings are obvious. Just bad.

Historia
A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spread-eagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing. But this is the third time Phil and his team has seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No one can imagine what sort of person would want to commit such horrible crimes.

Revisado: 12-31-20
The descriptions of babies being hurt were distressing to hear, and unnecessarily graphic. The main female character was irritatingly helpless and dependent on a man. The story itself has some interesting moments, but I am glad I didn't waste a credit on this.

Tissue thin premise.
Revisado: 10-26-19
I am fine with a light, fun, soapy story, but this one didn't work at all. None of the characters' reactions to the fake engagement were plausible and the whole scenario was a non-problem. I don't want to reveal spoilers, but the idea that one can profoundly heart someone, and then draw the conclusion that the person isn't right for them because they won't then give everything they want is bordering on sociopathic, but is presented as some kind of feminist self-awareness. I almost stopped then, and probably should have.
