I'm calling BS
Revisado: 03-15-23
First, an absolutely fantastic book, read masterfully by Norbert Leo Butz. The story, the pacing, the vivid imagery and word choice - all impeccable. I'm a huge fan of autobiographical books, and this is top-tier.
If Phil Knight actually wrote this book without the aid of a ghost writer (not just a good editor), then he is as good of a writer as he is the leading partner of a multi-billion dollar company. One could argue the structure and storytelling seem TOO good to be written by the personality type that we learn to love over the course of reading/listening. This is far more than a basic accounting of what went on in the early days of Nike; it is the exposed soul of the one struggling at every level to keep his dream alive.
As others have commented, the only downside of the book is that we all wish there was a part II - and we would all purchase it immediately. Bravo to all that were involved - ghost written or not.

The book is great, the Audible is... less so

Like most Americans, I really enjoy a good English accent. I'd usually say a Brit could read the phone book and I'd be interested in listening to it. I think I have found the one British accent though that actually detracts from a reading. And it's not the accent itself that's annoying, it's the unusual cadence and timing. Not a single sentence sounds natural. It's almost as if it's a computer generated voice that doesn't QUITE know where to put the emphasis of certain words and phrases.
I was given this book by a friend, and got about two chapters into it before a long road trip afforded me listening time - but not much reading-a-book time. Since I was enjoying the book (more on that later), I bought the audio book so I could continue where I left off while behind the wheel.
After about the first 15 minutes, I just couldn't take it anymore, and turned it off. It will need to wait until I'm available to physically read it. Every sentence was a struggle to comprehend. I found my brain actually restructuring the reading style just so I could comprehend paragraphs I had already read and fully understood. Who reads like that? Where on earth was the producer, who clearly should have intervened and said, "uh, yeah - could you read that again - THIS way...". And it's not like the book is targeted to an International audience either. There are enough references to "dollars" and things that let's you know this is an American author writing to (primarily) an American audience (although the content and advice is universal). So my guess is they picked the reader because, as I mentioned earlier, Americans off feel the cache of a British accent brings extra credibility. But somebody was asleep at the wheel and never veto'd the results as they should have.
Now, perhaps it was just me. Go listen to the sample on Audible. I'll wait. :)
Am I right? Pauses in the wrong (or at least radically different) places, patterns that just don't exist in normal discussion. Just a huge fail in every way. I used Audible to listen to other readers with the same name, but each one was a different person. I could never find a baseline of something maybe they read better.
As far as the book goes - I haven't finished it yet. But I'm really enjoying it so far (enough to purchase an Audible copy). So I'll give the book 5 stars, the reading 1, which averages to a 3.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Worth an immediate 2nd listening
Revisado: 06-22-21
If you've ever thought "McConaughey seems like a great guy - I'd love to hang with him some day" - this is your wish come true. It feels like you get to know him and his personal philosophy in an incredibly entertaining, story-driven way. He is masterful and telling those stories like they were yesterday, and your only wish would be that you wish it was longer (although it's not short at just shy of 7 hours). Fantastic audiobook; one of my favorites in my 80+ book collection.
