Historia
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

amazing story
Revisado: 09-05-19
It's amazing to learn where Heddy Lamaar came from and what she contributed to our lives. Her invention of the hopping frequencies with specially coded sender and reciever sounds similar to the enigma machine the allies couldn't crack for a long time. Imagine if Germany had faced the same handicap with torpedoes.

puts me to sleep, not in a good way
Revisado: 04-07-18
While this book has some interesting anecdotes, it gets tiresome because there are thousands of them, and they are given quickly. The book becomes a blur and there doesn't seem to be a connecting story line, at least not one that you can follow. Perhaps it is enjoyable if you only listen to a couple chapters at a time, but I like listening to books end to end. The author talks about his wife and how they live in a place full of famous people, but I'm not sure he actually knows the famous people. It seems like he spied on them from afar rather than interacted with them. I'll be returning this book.

The Heart of Centering Prayer

Historia
Centering prayer is the path to a wonderful and radical new way of seeing the world. It is not, as is sometimes thought, simply an act of devotional piety, nor is it a Christianized form of other meditation methods. Cynthia Bourgeault here cuts through the misconceptions to show that centering prayer is in fact a pioneering development within the Christian contemplative tradition.

Too much research, too little practice
Revisado: 04-02-18
What disappointed you about The Heart of Centering Prayer?
The book sounds like someone reading a doctoral thesis in a hurry. The concepts presented are referred to as if they were part of a physics or philosophy lecture, making them dry and uninteresting.
Has The Heart of Centering Prayer turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, just turned me off from this author.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator should slow down and use inflection at the right location. Even slowing the speed down to .85 it sounds fast. Slowing the speed more than that makes it sound like they're on drugs.
Any additional comments?
Read Teresa of Avila or Brother Lawrence, throw this book away.

Historia
In Chocolate Islands: Cocoa, Slavery, and Colonial Africa, Catherine Higgs traces the early-twentieth-century journey of the Englishman Joseph Burtt to the Portuguese colony of São Tomé and Príncipe - the chocolate islands - through Angola and Mozambique, and finally to British Southern Africa. Burtt had been hired by the chocolate firm Cadbury Brothers Limited to determine if the cocoa it was buying from the islands had been harvested by slave laborers forcibly recruited from Angola, an allegation that became one of the grand scandals of the early colonial era.

Difficult listen
Revisado: 03-21-18
The narration for the book is tedious, and the book itself is very dry on a subject that should have more emotion. It sounds like a shopping list.

Historia
Germany, 1660: When a dying boy is pulled from the river with a mark crudely tattooed on his shoulder, hangman Jakob Kuisl is called upon to investigate whether witchcraft is at play in his small Bavarian town. Whispers and dark memories of witch trials and the women burned at the stake just seventy years earlier still haunt the streets of Schongau.

Decent book, horrible narration
Revisado: 06-20-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I tried to listen to this book but the narration was so awful I had to stop. I will read the book, but am returning the audiobook portion.
Would you be willing to try another one of Grover Gardner’s performances?
No.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes.

Good story but mildly annoying narrator
Revisado: 12-04-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed this book. The storyline is very interesting, though it was a little difficult to keep the characters straight when the narrator is talking about Che's parents and grandparents.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Che Guevara?
The early years of Che on his motorcycle and the scams he pulls in the towns he visits.
Did Armando Durán do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
He has a pleasant voice but often mispronounces words, which is annoying since he seems to be a Spanish speaker.
