Sort of Joe Abercrombie-ish Meets Feminism
Revisado: 02-22-19
The humor was good and the battle scenes were great. Doubtful that Iron Age Britains were so forward leaning in their stance on Women’s role in battle, society. A distracting point that became more and more emphasized as the story moved on.

A Long Tale, That Was Just OK, Not Very Scary
Revisado: 11-29-14
This book was very long. Its not that it was boring, it just took forever to get through. The narrator did a good job of making different voices, but there was no sense of real urgency in terms of the plot. It really just lumbered along. At times it was good, at times it was boring. Overall, not worth the over 20 hours you have to put into it.

I stopped here because of the characters....
Revisado: 09-27-14
I really enjoyed all of the books up to this one. But somewhere in the middle of this book I began to get...distracted, unable to suspend my disbelief and enjoy the story. Or maybe it was that nagging feeling that the author had to "tell" us how Royce was instead of showing us.
It became really hard to believe that Royce was bad at all. We're constantly told that he has no morals or conscious and is really dark, but its tough to reconcile this with the fact that he always begrudgingly makes the right choice.

Historia
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

Eh...Knight
Revisado: 06-21-14
I'm a pretty picky in my criticism of audiobooks. I demand three dimensional characters, a good plot, good writing and of course an above average narrator to tie it all together.
While Red Knight showed promise in many of these areas, I don't like having to pay a "price"
or "premium" of "getting through the first 10 hours" to appreciate a story. I demand to be ensconced in the story throughout most of the book.
The narration was probably the best part of this fantasy story. The battle scenes were done well, but after a while, I kept asking myself whether I cared if the bad guys just killed everyone. Unfortunately, my answer was...No, I don't care.

Historia
John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

This book is boring, but the narrator almost....
Revisado: 06-21-14
Any book I don't finish I give only one or two stars. This book suffered from one of the worst audiobook afflictions a listener can encounter: being boring. The plot plods along with characters we are told are really bad, but there's little beyond one or two encounters to shape them into more than that.
Its a standard who dunnit, although set in ancient Rome. I got about 4/5ths through it but once I stop caring about the characters there's no point in continuing. While narrator Simon Vance was able to provide enough to keep me going that far, at some point I have to care about..welll...something!
I also wasn't able to suspend my disbelief that a politician would be out in the streets trying to solve a crime. Doesn't he have people for that?

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

No one knows who narrates this book
Revisado: 02-12-14
This book switches randomly between Simon Vance as the narrator for all of the characters, and individual voices for each of the characters. Its switches back and forth, and back and forth sometimes in the same chapter. Its really confusing, and takes away from the experience.
If you read reviews from the Dark Messiah and other books, this feature of the Dune audio book series continues, gets stranger, and makes some of the books unreadable.
It would have been better to pick one narrator or a bunch. This really is the strangest feature I've seen in a audiobook to date.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Narration/Writing Style Save Boring Plot
Revisado: 12-24-13
Pros:
-The narration works really well with the writing style. Its almost the perfect combination.
-The story has funny elements and is really light-hearted in many ways
Cons:
-The story really seems to lack a climax and can be boring were it not for the narration
-Repetitive sequences involving technical science slow many scenes down
