Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

More like The Dry River!
Revisado: 02-23-25
Loved the story, loved the attention to detail; it could have been told in a third of the time/pages.
I fell asleep many times throughout the book. The author had so much content, so much depth to explore—Martha, her husband, her sons, her relationship with the doctor, her identity as a woman and healer. While the book does explore all of these aspects, it does so in a monotonous, linear, and dry way. One of my best friends name is Martha, she works as a home health aide, and I swear her life is more interesting than this one.
My favorite part of the book was the very end—the author’s note—where she explains the historical inspiration behind the story. I wish that had been included at the beginning of the book; it would have given me, as a reader, more context to savor.
Would I recommend this book? If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep, it’s definitely a must!

Historia
1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times. So when the film’s mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled, and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves.

The Seven Veils of Hell?
Revisado: 10-14-24
The first third of the book was painful to get through—a perfect example of excessive description and unnecessary detail that doesn’t add to the story in the end. About two-thirds in, however, the book starts to make great points through Vera’s development, her strong work ethic, and defiance toward her mother. I found myself rooting for greater character exploration, especially as Jay also struggles with family dynamics. Nancy’s relationship with her father could have been an interesting thread to explore further also.
As an entrepreneur myself, I saw my own story reflected in Vera’s defiance of society’s expectations, her strong work ethic, but most of all in the artistic expression of her dance—her craft.
There was a clear opportunity to draw stronger parallels between Vera and Salomon and to explore the tormenting consequences of Nancy’s actions. The ending felt rushed, unexpected, and insufficient.
Nonetheless, if you really think about it, the book offers unique insights and valuable social critiques. Unlike Salomon, Silvia had all the right steps for a great dance, the right ingredients for a great tamale, and still fell short.

Historia
Rich Dad Poor Dad is Robert's story of growing up with two dads - his real father and the father of his best friend, his rich dad - and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book explodes the myth that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. In the 20th anniversary edition of this classic, Robert offers an update on what we’ve seen over the past 20 years related to money, investing, and the global economy.

Rich Dad’s point of view !
Revisado: 03-23-24
Robert claims he implantes the learning from both his rich dad and poor dad. Let’s be clear, he does not. He very much practices the teaching from his Rich Dad and uses the experiences of his Poor Dad to juxtapose and criticize.
That said, as an entrepreneur myself, I found this book fascinating, challenging and practical. I work in the nonprofit space, thus I don’t fully agree with his critique of public goods. Overall however I think there are a few gem take aways:
1) changing “I can’t afford it to how can I
2) When emotion goes up, intelligence tend to go down, learn to be an observer of your emotions.
3) Pay yourself first. It will help you be more disciplined.
4)Money as a tool and social construct to play with and take calculated risks with. Mind and time is all we really need have. Use education and action to experiment, fail eventually become rich.
Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. Edgar to learn what you took away from it.

The power of: praying really hard.
Revisado: 12-10-23
Conflicted.Surprised. Grateful. Terrified.— these are all the feelings that “the woman in me” evoked in me— pun intended.
I didn't know that one of the biggest stars in the world lived such a difficult reality. This book certainly gave me perspective and appreciation for my own privacy and “simple life” — at the same time, I could feel this book, bring my energy down. Seem more like a complaining session, rather than a deep reflection and appreciation of a extraordinary circumstances in an extremely challenging environment … and maybe that’s what in needed to be for the author: a cathartic session letting it all out— as a reader thought I was longing for more depth and self-reflection into a facet of the world few of us will ever witness.— “Praying really hard” just does not cut it for the man in me.

Maybe you should talk to someone… Again.
Revisado: 11-13-23
It’s the second time I read this book, rather, I listen to it… every time I can’t help but feel a sense of grief for Lori, for Wendell for John, for Rita and others. — their stories and lessons have and will continue to ring in my ears all my life.
This book is filled with metaphors of life, lessons, and jokes that will illustrate important wisdom about life. For me, however, especially the second time reading it, this book was less about the lessons, and jokes, and more about trusting that voice inside ourselves, that self-reflection that we all have. Allowing that Wendell (inside joke) within us to be heard, to be alive, and to guide us through life's processes.
Because of this book, this time around, I started writing poetry again. This is my way of trusting my own voice, my own interwendell.
After many years of attending my own therapy, I feel compelled to share here that that is what therapy is also all about.— Learning to trust and listen to one's inter-wisdom.
I am going to assume that, like me, you will find this book therapeutic. The good thing is Lori, Wendell for John, Rita and others are only a page or click away. Grief like me, if you have to, reflect, process but don’t be afraid to come back and hear those stories again. They are filled with lessons, learning but most of all, your own interWendell or inter-wisdom.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Valuable, thrilling and emotionally draining
Revisado: 10-09-23
As a white Disabled American I find this book quite eye-opening while at the same time exhausting.
I love how Byan cares so much about his work, and about each of the stories he tells. At the same time, as an advocate, it is exhausting to hear the harsh reality of one victim after another. I wish the book had done a better job of tackling between hope and challenge of the criminal justice system.
The book is certainly for those who want to better understand the realities of black Americans. This is a must-read for all students and activists with the caveat of reading it with a peer support group, so that you can discuss and get emotional support in each of the cases mentioned.

Historia
We meet Andrew Leland as he’s suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he’s midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years, even decades. He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in. Soon— but without knowing exactly when—he will likely have no vision left. Full of apprehension but also dogged curiosity, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him.

I’m Disabled Proud and moved by this !!
Revisado: 09-13-23
I loved this story. I loved the contradictions. I loved the complexities and simplicities of it. I loved the rich research aspect of it and the ordinary stories. I loved how we follow his own journey while also the journey of the blind / disability movement at large.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m purposely tying to showcase the duality of this book. It does an extraordinary job at explaining but sides of a particular debate while also commenting on the struggle of everything in between.
This book is meant for those who are blind/disabled or have a family member or a friend who is a want to lean more— but even if you fit none of those categories, I’m sure you’ll find the writing, the stories and the arguments enjoyable but more importantly thought-provoking.

Historia
Suddenly finding herself 40 and single, Lori Gottlieb said the unthinkable in her March 2008 article in The Atlantic: Maybe she, and single women everywhere, needed to stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming and instead go for Mr. Good Enough. Looking at her friends' happy marriages to good enough guys who happen to be excellent husbands and fathers, Gottlieb declared it time to reevaluate what we really need in a partner. By looking at everything from culture to biology, in Marry Him, Gottlieb frankly explores the dilemma that so many women today seem to face.

Am I the only guy reading this?
Revisado: 08-22-23
Ok so when the book stated I could help but think “give me a break” there are more important things in life than finding the one or being married. Regardless I stuck through it because I liked the author and the narrator.
As I fished the book, I am genuinely surprised by how much I liked it and how useful I found it. The whole “needs and wants” distinction plus how we say we want things and then don’t notice them when we have them— pretty great insights.
I still think the bigger point of readjusting expectations is much more powerful than what the book make it seem. I wish the book would have discussed the larger implications of its messaging beyond dating — but perhaps that’s wishful thinking though, after all it is a dating book.
Oh and it desperately needs some queer and LGBT perspectives please. All in all however, good read. Recommend.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Wow! I’m speechless
Revisado: 07-10-23
I will be honest and share that it took me a while to get through this book. I picked up and put it back down about 3 or 4 times. However oh I’m a glad a finished this book. From the third quarter of the book, the story became incredibly powerful and meaningful. I must admit this is probably due to the worked and character developments in the first three quarters.
I rarely write reviews and yet I felt incredibly compelled to write this one.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Interesting, inspiring and somewhat fluffy story
Revisado: 02-08-21
Although I agreed with many of the points in the book ... I can’t help but find it to be unstructured and a bit confusing at time... Part of me wishes the author would have pick one or two or the stories in the book and dug deeper into them.
Nonetheless. I enjoyed the book and would certainly recommend it.
