Thor, Odin, Loki, Freyja, the Valkyries, Valhalla, Ragnarok — many of the places we encounter these and other names, places, and events from Norse mythology in daily life and pop culture are connected to the medieval sources in name only.

my suggestion is a course-specific drinking game: have a horn of ale for every modern song lyric reference you find. Skål!

Historia
Dating to the ninth century BC, Homer’s timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb Introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.

heavily edited and truncated version
Revisado: 02-05-23
the Robert fagles translation is great, but unfortunately you only hear some of it since large sections of the narrative are cropped out and replaced with ultra-brief synopses that wreck narrative cohesion and leave you lurching from one scene to another with very little information about what happened in between. i honestly have no idea why anyone would publish something like this, especially for a classic. I've never wanted to read 65% of Moby Dick in random order. the narration was excellent, which makes this even more of a shame.

Only get this recording if you find an unwavering backdrop of "tv static" and chatting technicians to be in anyway desirable.

good story, bad narration
Revisado: 01-14-22
ridiculous voices, unnatural cadence (was each line recorded out of context, then stitched together in post production?) and a general sense that the narrator usually does announcements for Monday night football make a fun book to read into a cringeworthy book to listen to

Historia
The great adventure story tells of Odysseus, a veteran of the Trojan War, who - through a landscape peopled with monsters, sea nymphs, evil enchantresses, and vengeful gods - makes his tortuous way home to his faithful wife, Penelope. Shipwrecked numerous times, faced with apparently insurmountable obstacles, offered the temptations of ease, comfort, and even immortality, Odysseus remains steadfast and determined. Themes of courage and perseverance, fidelity and fortitude.

Historia
Step back to a time when the mysteries of the universe could seem overwhelming. Cycles of nature kept predictable time with the sun, the moon, and the stars, yet crops failed, disease struck, storms ravaged, and empires fell without warning. In the region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, people responded to such tumult with a rich variety of religious beliefs.

points deducted for abysmal pronunciation
Revisado: 07-30-18
great, except the truly awful pronunciation of proper nouns that pervades the whole thing. "Ba'al" pronounced like "Bale" and "Plebeians" pronounced "Publians".. sometimes it's so mangled you can't actually tell what he's talking about
