Hapsburgs at their most interesting!
Revisado: 02-08-24
Allison Pataki is one of my favorite authors of historical fiction and she does not disappoint this time! She skillfully waves facts of history just a little bit of fiction, so we learn to know and love (or hate) various members of the Habsburg dynasty

Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Painful. Not much plot
Revisado: 10-24-23
I finish this after skipping numerous chapters in the middle because the story just wasn’t going anywhere. Very predictable and way too much dwelling on nature. The only reason I finished it is because I had paid.

Best for learning a language
Revisado: 04-19-17
The Pimsleur method encourages listening, pronunciation, and repetition to aid comprehension. I actually was able to learn some Spanish! Other programs moved too quickly or concentrated on random grammar. This method teaches the way people learn to speak as children. Listening and repeating. I highly recommend this method.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Too many sub-plots
Revisado: 07-08-15
After enjoying "Pillars in the Earth," I looked forward to this second in the series. However, the constant back and forth of the female protagonist as to whether to marry or stay in the convent became tiresome. Also, it seems Mr Follett an obsession with the female breast. The constant description of sexual behavior became almost comical. I'm in a good club, and had thought this would have been a good title for us. However, after "reading" it, I would not recommend this book

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Delightful
Revisado: 06-25-15
I bought this title blindly during an audible sale, and am I ever glad I did. The allusions to other literary works ("Fall of the House of Usher"
M" "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," and dozens others, which pepper the novel make it a delight to an English major like me! The story's twists are not too predictable, but are realistic overall. Listen to this book! You will enjoy it!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

One of the best!
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the was Hosseini tells his story of two boys in Afghanistan and opens our eyes to the culture of the region. Hosseini's narration adds to the enjoyment. With so many Middle-Eastern places, names, and words, his guiding us with the pronunciations is helpful. Reading this book would not make as strong an impact as listening to it!
Which character – as performed by Khaled Hosseini – was your favorite?
THe protagonist and his "coming of age" makes a deep impact on any reader.
Any additional comments?
I wish everyone in the West could read this incredible book. Do yourself a favor! Listen to it.

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

Would you consider the audio edition of Teacher Man to be better than the print version?
Absolutely! McCourt's Irish brogue and story-telling technique make this book, a collection of stories, perfect!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
McCourt's struggles to become a certified teacher for the New York public schools! His eating one of the student's sandwiches in class was hilarious. There are so many funny anecdotes in this book......

Almost as good as "The Kite Runner"
Revisado: 04-18-12
If you could sum up A Thousand Splendid Suns in three words, what would they be?
Hosseini creates reality
What other book might you compare A Thousand Splendid Suns to and why?
"The Kite Runner" is set in the same time and general location, and Hosseini tells the Western reader about Middle-Eastern culture, but this is an entirely different story.
What does Atossa Leoni bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The feminine voice
