Just when you think you’ve heard it all…surprise!
Revisado: 04-07-24
This book created something fresh and new - combining the fantasy and steam of supernatural romances with Ali Hazelwood’s perfect pacing and lovably awkward, brilliant characters. The mythology is all familiar but different enough to make it exciting. I was sad when it was over!

Historia
Matthew Walsh doesn't have feelings, and he likes it that way. Between breathing life into his family's third generation Boston architecture shop, keeping the peace with his five siblings, and competing in triathlons, he doesn't have much time for feelings. At least that's the case until Lauren Halsted tumbles into his life.

Physically-driven Romance Reinforced by Flat Narration
Revisado: 03-06-23
If you love a romance that has lots of physical steam with a side dish of emotional connection, you may really enjoy this. What I have most enjoyed in other Kate Canterbary novels I’ve listened to is how she uses the characters’ growing emotional connection to build the romance. I like rooting for the characters to fall for each other, even if the steamy parts happen early.
This one, though, is scant on pulling heart strings until late in the book. And when it does, only one character is engaged. It’s also let down by narration that conveys little to no emotion and production that’s flat and quiet. Even with two narrators, the characters’ voices aren’t distinct, and funny lines and a heart-rending ones are delivered in the same quiet, deadpan way.
Overall, I was disappointed as a fan of emotionally-driven romances with more dynamic narration. Others may really connect with this.

Hi, my name is Bree Camden, and I’m hopelessly in love with my best friend and star quarterback Nathan Donelson (so is half of America, judging by the tabloids and how much the guy dates). The first step is admitting it, right? Except, I can never admit it to him because he clearly doesn’t see me that way, and the last thing I want is for things to get weird between us. Nothing but good old-fashioned no-touching-the-sexiest-man-alive platonic friendship for us! Everything is exactly how I like it! Yes. Good. (I’m not crying; I’m just peeling an onion.)

Doesn’t live up to its potential
Revisado: 11-08-22
I enjoyed the beginning of the book, the secondary characters, and the will they/won’t they dance of the first third of the book. But the book got decreasingly fun and increasingly saccharine after the halfway point, with too much time spent re-describing the same feelings or settings in ever more ornate ways, while rushing through meaningful dialog and fun plot points and kissing opportunities to keep developing the main characters.
Wasn’t worth the credit.

About 4 hours too long
Revisado: 07-25-22
I am a big Lily Chu fan, and I really enjoyed the love story of the main characters. At the same time, this took much longer than previous books to become invested in the main characters, and was really slow to start. I stuck with it because I hoped it would become as engaging as previous books. Well I ended up enjoying the story, it just felt a bit bloated, I stuck with it because I hoped it would become as engaging as previous books. While I ultimately enjoyed the story, the first third just felt a bit bloated, with lots of detail that neither added character development, nor entertainment.

Absolutely Delightful
Revisado: 05-07-22
I love how Jasmine Guillory’s stories feature characters learning and growing together, and this was such a great example of what a difference communication makes in a relationship. And that it centered on books was the icing on the cake. My favorite of her books yet!

Revisado: 05-02-20
I downloaded this book because I thought it would be hilarious to hear Diddy try to lull me to sleep. To my astonishment, I didn’t make it past the first six minutes. I woke the next morning, well rested.
I’ve listened to it each night since, always falling asleep before the end. I find this a highly effective sleep meditation. Even if just for giggles, I encourage you to give it a shot. You might be surprised at how effective it is.

Historia
Hello. My name is Stevie Cartwright, and I've been witchless for 30 days. If only there was a support group for down-on-their-luck ex-witches who've had their powers slapped right out of them (literally). Just as I was licking my wounds after returning to my hometown of Ebenezer Falls, Washington, and navigating my suddenly nonmagical existence with the help of my familiar, Belfry, things got sticky. Enter an ex-spy and newly departed spirit named Winterbottom, who's infiltrated my life with his sexy British accent and a couple of requests....

Poor Production
Revisado: 04-16-18
This is a decent book - an entertaining enough story for those, like me, who enjoy a very light-hearted mystery with a supernatural bent. The problem is that the production has very long pauses in the dialog, presumably because the narrator recorded the different voices separately? Either way, it’s stilted, and it jarred me out of the story so much that it took multiple tries to get through it.
I also found the voice of Belfry’s character grating, and one of the English accents is distractingly bad. It’s a shame; I think I might have given the next book in the series a try if the narration/production were better.

So, So Bad
Revisado: 10-31-17
I didn't even make it 2 hours into this book. In that time, I found what little of the plot that unfolds so implausible, the dialog so cringe-worthy, and the two main characters so insufferable that I just can't listen to another minute. Example: what 18-year old has the means to have lunch at the same caliber restaurant where an older actor treats his daughter to salmon, and then takes a girl on a date at a fancy hotel. Couldn't suspend disbelief long enough to keep going.

Narration Made It Impossible to Finish
Revisado: 03-23-16
The narration is insufferable. All of the dialogue seems to be either yelled or whined. I find I cannot even finish this, and am disppointed that I wasted 4 hours and can't bear to listen to the remaining 9.
I have really enjoyed most of the previous books in this series, and I was really looking forward to diving in to this one. However, I neglected to read the reviews and check the narrator, which would have tipped me off to grab the paperback.

Entertaining, but not incredible.
Revisado: 05-26-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
While the story was entertaining and the characters were interesting, this story could have been more than just entertaining. I found myself wanting my heartstrings plucked as much as my funny-bone was tickled.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I found it mostly satisfying. Some of it was predictable, but, delightfully, some of it was quite a surprise.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I'd change the narrators. I found some mis-pronunciations annoying and distracting ("vokka" instead of vodka, for example), and the cadence just wasn't right. It didn't allow me to get as lost in the story as I could have with different narrators.
