Historia
Everyone in Silver Bell, Arkansas has heard of Walter Lorry. Rumors have been circulating about the strange old man around town for years. He’s weird. Stooped and odd-looking. Always keeps to himself and never speaks to anyone. At one time, he had a wife and kid, but no one has seen them in forever. Then there’s the matter of him sleeping on his front porch every night when there’s a perfectly good bed inside his house. Who in their right mind would do that?

When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

Fun story
Revisado: 12-16-23
Narrator has a pleasing voice, and is easy to understand, but in several places, she pauses five or six seconds in the middle of a sentence, and it is disturbing.

Historia
Vinh Chung was born in South Vietnam, just eight months after it fell to the communists in 1975. His family was wealthy, controlling a rice-milling empire worth millions; but within months of the communist takeover, the Chungs lost everything and were reduced to abject poverty. Knowing that their children would have no future under the new government, the Chungs decided to flee the country. In 1979, they joined the legendary “boat people” and sailed into the South China Sea, despite knowing that an estimated two hundred thousand of their countrymen had already perished at the hands of brutal pirates and violent seas.

Enjoyable, but not compelling.
Revisado: 02-23-23
This is a fun, uncomplicated mystery story with enjoyable characters. I did find the storyline a bit repetitive and thus easy to put down, but there was enough interest in the characters to pick it up again. The audio narration was excellent, and is probably the primary reason I stuck with it but had I actually been reading instead of listening I would likely not have finished it.

Shock Porn- nothing redeeming about it
Revisado: 05-01-19
There is nothing uplifting or redeeming about this book. If you read it what you will take away from it is bad memories, an increased sense of evil in the world, and an ever larger vocabulary of curse words. I am unable to write an adequate review and instead am herein quoting readers.com :
"This book was shock porn. By that I mean the gimmick of the book was to shock readers with the cruel treatment of a little girl by her abusive father. Look at how Turtle is forced to shoot dangerous weapons! Look how Turtle is beaten up by her father! Look at how Turtle is raped by her father! Look at how Martin uses Cayenne for target practice and then cuts off a finger!
Shock porn is meant to horrify the reader. But don't confuse horror, and sensationalism, with drama. The story was all too obvious, and all too simple, from page one. Little girl is abused by father. Little girl is conflicted, and takes more and more abuse. Eventually, little girl will run away from and/or kill father."

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Fantastic Read
Revisado: 05-01-19
5+++***I LOVED this book! I was absolutely captivated by Kya, the main character, who lives a solitary life amidst the swamp flora and fauna on the North Carolina coast. The book begins with a love story, her mother and father. But the marriage has deteriorated and at the age of ten, abandoned by her mother, discarded by her father, siblings and everyone she ever loved, Kya merges with the marsh, the only mother she has left. Growing up as much a part of the land as the trees, the insects and the birds, she is closer to nature than to other human beings. Now a young adult she is nothing but a whisper to the people in town, the "marsh girl." When a local football legend is found dead on her island rumors that have circulated for years lead to her arrest as the accused. This is an authentic and intellectual display of a strong leading female character and her story of survival.
The author is a wildlife scientist and award-winning nonfiction nature writer. She has written a wonderful debut novel with vivid descriptions, well-developed characters, and moving poetry. "The writing is beautiful with a lyrical rhythm that sways the reader like the gentle rocking of a boat." And it has a delightful, unforgettable ending!

hmmmmm
Revisado: 05-01-19
This is a liberal agenda-driven 58 minute vignette about a bored wife who is ready to commit adultery with an arrogant and flirtatious yet unappealing man. Curtis Sittenfeld is capable of beautiful economic prose that immediately captures the reader's attention, but I've yet to read anything of hers that is uplifting. This is truly unfortunate because she has so much talent as a writer. This is the sort of romance story I would have expected to read 30 years ago in "Woman's Day" or "Ladies Home Journal." Diane Lane, the narrator, with her gorgeous voice was fantastic.
