Once again, I am conflicted about colonialism. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy the read. I am going on quickly to read another E M Forster work.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Fluff But Worth It For Sure
Revisado: 02-26-23
Began listening only because my book club had chosen as our pick for next month. I thought it would be “fluff” I could fit in between my current passion for non-fiction science, religion, and politics.
I LOVED IT! It’s a warm and witty tale that lends respect to a wonderful sea creature as well as a lovely lady and her friends and acquaintances, especially her new “friend,” Cameron, who definitely needs some brushing up. It starts slowly, but I loved how it moved ad especially the ending. An easy-going, warm, entertaining fluff!

Well, I’m Hooked!
Revisado: 02-14-23
Just finished The Magdalen Deception, which I enjoyed both reading on Kindle and listening on Audible simultaneously. I’m so looking forward to it he second in the series.
Though raised in the Catholic Church, as an adult I didn’t practice my religion until the recent five years. My faith is secure; however I love reading the histories of all world religions and the possibilities presented when the work is fiction, but historically accurate.
The Catholic Church, though we believe it was started by Jesus Christ, is a human institution; thus, it suffers human foibles and has been WRONG at several times in the history of the world.
I’m looking forward to book 2 of the 3-book series.

Historia
The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world in postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving "a great gentleman". But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness" and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served.

Nobel Work!
Revisado: 10-15-17
I’d seen the movie years ago , remembering that I ‘d been bothered by the repression of the protagonist. When Kazuo Ishiguro was named as this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature recipient I decided to listen to this novel in order to understand and appreciate the reasons for naming this laureate.
I absolutely loved every minute of this story. How Mr. Ishiguro places himself inside the being of the very proper English butler is remarkable. Of course I come to this after journeying through “Downton Abbey” from start to finish two times. I’m enthralled with this period of proper British history; it’s so foreign to my middle class American upbringing!
I found myself not so interested in the story as much as being thoroughly enmeshed in the very being of Mr. Stephens (or is it Stevens?!). I could flip back to the very beginning and listen to it all over again!
Additionally, the narrator’s performance is impeccable, simply spot on. What a gem was this audio experience. Now, I’m going to listen to another Ishiguro work.

Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

What a Wonderful Tale
Revisado: 07-11-17
With the literary ability reminiscent of Charles Dickens, the ingenuity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and the imagination of Lewis Carroll in "Alice in Wonderland," Amor Towle's second novel is a real treat. It was my first, but most certainly not my last, experience of reading and listening at the same time. What a treat!
I fell in love with Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov on page one - and my affection grew throughout the entire story. A gentleman's gentleman, his erudite demeanor is a joy to witness. His affection, respect and empathy for his fellow man (women and children, too) is enviable. I've come away with renewed energy to keep the Golden Rule monitoring my actions and intentions. This book is a definite YES.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

I am not a science fiction fan; nor am I a fan of futuristic tales. But, this story grabbed me from the very beginning, throughout, and the ending was spectacular. I can't recommend this highly enough. I also think the movie will be a must-see, starring Matt Damon. Can't wait!

Nelson DeMille - again
Revisado: 11-14-12
If you could sum up Spencerville in three words, what would they be?
SMART - INTRIGUING - THOUGHT-PROVOKING
I have 'read' almost all of DeMille's books and have enjoyed each and every one. "Spencerville" is another great 'read.' Scott Brick does a wonderful job on the narration, which is so important to the story in audible content. Although it's not international intrigue, because I know so much about his characters, this book just picks up where others have left off (in terms of character studies). DeMille's characters are well-defined and interesting - as I know next to nothing about the world of international intrigue. These books take me away to strange, exciting and scary places!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Spencerville?
OMG - so many memorable moments. For instance, when Keith arrives at the home of Annie's sister and Annie isn't there, the way he handles himself with respect to his emotions in light of so much disappointment is incredible. How he is able to have so much self-awareness as well as ability to 'read' others, instantaneously, is fantastic. He knows exactly how much to let people know about what he's thinking - never says too much - or too little.
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His narrative skills MAKE the stories for me.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Nothing - and have 'heard' his reading on other books - he's a terrific narrator.
Not finished yet - can't wait to find out what happens - and then I also don't want the story to end!
Any additional comments?
What knowledge and experience Nelson DeMIlle has - about / in a world so foreign to that in which I live.

I'm continuing the series in chronilogical order.
Revisado: 08-08-12
Would you listen to Shelter Mountain again? Why?
Shelter Mountain continues the story of a fictitious out of the way town in the giant redwood area of California. I'm enjoying the stories, the continuing characters and even Robyn Carr's making her characters moral examples for us all. Can't wait to start the third book.
I love to listen to audible books while I am on the treadmill and while I knit / crochet - totally enjoyable and lots of exercise and socks made!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shelter Mountain?
The integrity of the characters, even including a man who "lives outside the law" but has scruples with regard to others in the stories.
What about Therese Plummer’s performance did you like?
She's an excellent narrator - even using some incorrect grammar that I believe would be used by some of the characters....

I loved this entry into another series
Revisado: 08-01-12
I'm such a fan of Jan Karon and John McDonnough's reading of the Mitford series. I was looking for another interesting series to start listening to and this novel fit the bill. The characters are interesting and the story thought-provoking. The performance by Therese Plummer is excellent - a female John McDonnough! I''ve already bought the second in the series and can't wait to settle down with my knitting and another tale of the fictional location of Virgin River.
I listened to the entire book of Virgin River in two days!
