Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Historia
Over the course of his seemingly irreproachable life, Magnus Pym has been all things to all people: a devoted family man, a trusted colleague, a loyal friend - and the perfect spy. But in the wake of his estranged father's death, Magnus vanishes, and the British Secret Service is up in arms. Is it grief, or is the reason for his disappearance more sinister? And who is the mysterious man with the sad moustache who also seems to be looking for Magnus? In A Perfect Spy, John le Carré has crafted one of his crowning masterpieces.

best from the best
Revisado: 04-10-20
If you are new to LeCarre, don't read this one now - get all his other classics under your belt first; A Perfect Spy is a brilliant, tragic, and incredibly brilliant book all by itself, but the weight of its story is doubled by being a part of the author's history, and so - in the same way that Eastwood's film Unforgiven serves not only as a great western, but as a cap to his western career, and through that, a cap to westerns themselves - A Perfect Spy is the perfect spy novel by the perfect spy writer.

great world, underdeveloped story
Revisado: 10-24-19
The world of The Bone Witch is very rich, and the author hints at some very compelling history, but the young-leaning YA story is often at odds with its much more mature setting in a way I can only imagine is frustrating to both audiences.
Simultaneously, the plot itself feels heavily padded, as if it and the next books in the series might have been a single mid-sized novel taken together, but she was encouraged to break it up to sell it as a "trilogy," and as such, it fails to carry enough weight to justify itself. Imagine if the first Star Wars film ended after a half hour, yet called itself a full story; interesting, but not satisfying.
Still, some great, highly original fantasy ideas carry the reader forward, and occasionally some powerful writing sneaks itself in. Overall The Bone Witch is a pretty good book, and I'm interested in her further projects.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Historia
For over 20 years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity.
But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.

nasty fun
Revisado: 07-23-19
Not Matheson's best, but still has an undeniable effect on the reader - at turns inventive, scary, lurid, strange and hugely entertaining, it's easy to forgive its weaknesses - dated sexual politics, and a too-neat solution. The influence this had on Stephen King is obvious on every page.

The controller stood back. 'Right,' he said. 'Spin 'em!' The man flipped the piece of wood and the coins spun up into the air above his head and dropped down on to the carpet. There was silence. Wake in Fright tells the tale of John Grant's journey into an alcoholic, sexual and spiritual nightmare. It is the original and the greatest outback horror story. Bundanyabba and its citizens will forever haunt its listeners.
