Historia
Former soldier. Ex-copper. Current man on the edge. Shunned by his old colleagues, and dividing his time between a dead-end job and the bottom of a whisky bottle, former Police Scotland detective superintendent Bob Hoon’s life is a mess. Then an old face from Hoon’s Special Forces days turns up asking for help: His teenage daughter has been missing for months, the police have drawn a blank, and he needs the kind of help that only Hoon can provide. And besides, Hoon owes him one.

I enjoyed the gruff, no-nonsense, attitude and the narrator made it feel "real." For a US English speaker it felt relatable.

Double Dub Faux French Canadian Trapper Accent
Revisado: 11-14-23
Love the premise JS! I'm willing to take the ride along with you on some follow up books. I mean - yes, it's a little transparent but if you need a good comedy to break up the 3 hour commute - this is your go to book. But WW. Dear, Dear Double Dub. I've bought so many books simply because of your performances. I am like "Buy the Book!" regardless - it's Wil Wheaton. I know Scalzi is hooking you up as the "go to guy" for all things Scalzi. And praise to the "Kings of Comedy" here... But every accent came across as an amazingly bad Faux French Canadian trapper in this performance. Please for the love of money - don't ever change that... This series has to become known as Double Dub's does Canada. Again, no disrespect. You guys are the "go to" guys. But Kate Mulgrew has nothing to worry about with your slavic or euro accents. I'm still chuckling: Every... Single... Time. If your real temperament is anything like your perceived temperament - you know exactly what I mean and you should embrace the inner Canadian... Love it! Next plateful please.

Historia
The economy has taken a turn for the worse, and Hank is working as a part-time gravedigger (and more than part-time graverobber). Despite being an expert shoveler, it’s not his top career choice, and he’s anxious to take any "legitimate" criminal work that comes along. In that vein, he finds himself hired by a mysterious woman who wants him to recover an even more mysterious trunk that was stolen from her mansion.

Hard Luck Hank is always good for a full laugh.
Revisado: 11-14-23
I appreciate the Hankiverse. I can always count on a good laugh with Hank. If you're looking for literature: Well, if you close your eyes and squint really, really, really hard and hit yourself in the head with a somewhat reasonably soft mallet - you might find that this is indeed literature. Otherwise you must channel the H and just roll with the flow. Steven - I love you my man. But you really need to let folks help you out with a little QC on the audio engineering. Literally several hundred repeats of the same line. I like to think that Hank is helping out with the audio engineering. Hank gets distracted by a sandwich and rereads the sentence. Then, he notices that he did it. Stops and then thinks - well, close enough. Whatever the equivalence is to horeshoes and hand grenades is first and foremost in Hanks thoughts here. I know you're the hardest working author in show biz - but seriously: drop a note on your fan board. We can mark the repetitions. I mean - unless Hank really is in charge of production... Then, let me buy you another sandwich and "Keep on Keepin' on my Brother".

Great tie in to the Infinite universe
Revisado: 07-25-22
I must have been listening to a different book than other reviewers. I mean it has pew-pew lasers, chain guns, rail guns, personal transporters, dinosaurs, phallic supernatural aliens, and 4th Reich Nazis who have killed (almost) every not-white, non-compliant, person (Duh, Nazis that's what they do). Top that with 80's movie references, cross-genre 80's MTV first-gen music, old-school military terms, and for the '80s: a very restrained long hair rocker, sex drive, delivered by both genders. No words other than a campy romp come to mind. It was like Carl Weathers from Predator, meets Top Gun, with overtones of Running Man and just a straight-out, borrowing (wink-wink, rip-off) of Total Recall. If you were a teen/tween in 1980 - this is pretty much your entire adolescent run into your early 20s.

It’s whispered that behind every mysterious death lurks a Quadrad. But when Garm enters the wide galaxy, she finds her prestigious training entirely insufficient. Most Quadrad are abysmal failures, unable to cope in an advanced technological empire. The Quadrad are nothing but a very clever marketing campaign that has been going on for 20,000 years. Prequel to Hank
Revisado: 10-13-21
I loved Hank and this is fun as a prequel. It took me a while to get used to the narrator but once I accepted that it was a prequel to Hank and not Hank - I enjoyed the story. I'm a Campbell fan and I'm glad he's working on ways to expand the Hank universe. DeCuir did a good job - again: once you realize that Liam Owen is the voice of Hank - it makes sense to replace him. In the long run - DeCuir's Garm was a fun listen. It was a bit offputting to hear some of the names and places mispronounced until you realize that Hank's an idiot and was pronouncing them incorrectly. I still laughed out loud and Campbell's sense of dry humor and acerbic wit still rings true. Keep up the great work Campbell. I look forward to the next addition to the Hankiverse.

Historia
In sports, everybody loves redemption stories, the underdog who no one believes in but through sheer hard work wins it all. But no one tells the stories of the players who work hard and don’t make it. In pro football, 53 guys get on the roster. Ten make it to the practice squad. And then there’s the 64th Man - that’s Billy Logan (Cena), who seems to always be one spot from glory.

This was a fun little love story couched in testosterone. Cena brought a very unassuming and subtle performance. The entire cast was great - except Forte. Forte can't handle praise. Better to keep him humble.

REAMDE universe characters - ends like SevenEves
Revisado: 02-12-20
I really enjoyed REAMDE and we see those characters revisited - but then this turns into the last half of SevenEves.
I say this because it went from being great SCI-FI to SCI-Fantasy to Fantasy to a hurried mess. REAMDE was a consistent narrative and finished strong. SevenEves: FABULOUS until it wasn't. 2/3 in and I was yelling at my speakers to hurry.
Mr. S.: I love your commitment. 30 and 40 hour books are hard to write. Elegantly tried - but I just couldn't get there from here. It fell out of my genre at about 1/3 to 1/2. I'm not giving up on Mr. S. But I'd love to hear you do 100% Sci-FI. You're great at it. But the fantasy stuff just throws a wet blanket on the fire.
If fantasy is your gig - make it 3.5 to 4.5.

Stuart Smalley becomes a Monk
Revisado: 04-01-19
A cross between Christ's Sermon on the Mount delivered by a deadpan Stuart Smalley after being analyzed by multiples of peer committee reviews. I garnered no insights beyond those of everyday common platitudes. The TV series AP Bio had Jack write this book in season 1. I felt like I was being clubbed to death by a really crappy self help book.

Sci-Fi comedy at it's best.
Revisado: 03-22-17
If you could sum up Hard Luck Hank: Robot Farts in three words, what would they be?
I'm NOT Fat
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I'm well into middle age and Campbell makes me laugh robustly every time. I don't cheer at sporting events. I don't wave my hands at church. In fact you won't typically know I'm even in the room. But Campbell makes me belly laugh just like the National Lampoon movies did back in the 70's.
Any additional comments?
Campbell is great at this genre. This isn't rocket science. Well, it has rockets and it has science - but they don't go together. And come on - it has "FARTS" right there in the title. If you can't appreciate that - this is not for you. Steer clear and go back to literature. this is meant to be light-hearted humor at it's best. Paraphrasing Hank - "Did she just call me fat with her dying breath? Who does that?"

What did you like best about this story?
It's a fresh take on an old theme. Taylor captured an excitement in galactic exploration.
Any additional comments?
Sci Fi delivered with a sense of humor. It's not flawless science. Taylor glosses over details but then is he really going to build a real time FTL comm. system? If you're ready to go for a ride and have a laugh - this books for you. If you want to knit pick the science and politics - then pass.
