Historia
It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

A Unique and Magical Tale
Revisado: 07-24-23
I completely agree with the reviewer who objected to the description of this book as “hilarious” or “hysterical.” Yes, it is often very funny, largely because of the remarkable Juliet Stevenson’s portrayal of Enid Pretty (as well as her other marvelous character portraits). But there is also a deep well of pain in the story, much of this reflecting the personal horrors and suffering in the aftermath of World War I. Each major character has known tragedy; some rise above it, others fall victim to it. I heartedly recommend this beautiful book, but I suggest that readers not approach it as I foolishly did, as “light” reading. I will be carrying Miss Benson and her golden beetle in my heart for a long time. Diana Burgwyn

Historia
Clay has had his fill of home life. A global plague has brought the world to a screeching halt, and with little to look forward to but a summer of video-calling friends, vying with annoying sisters for the family computer, and tuning out his parents’ financial worries, he’s only too happy to retreat to the woods. From the moment the elegant little dog with the ornate collar appears like an apparition among the trees, Clay sees something uncanny in her.

Historia
The Good Companions follows a number of discontents or ‘lost souls’ as they respectively gravitate towards a concert troupe that is on the verge of disbanding. An adventure around the Shires of England following the fates and fortunes of the unlikely group, The Good Companions is a popular contemporary classic which has recently experienced a resurgence in public interest and acclaim due to the finesse of Priestley’s writing.

Wonderful escapism
Revisado: 02-17-23
I am embarrassed to admit how many times over the years I have read this book. I love the characters, their names, the setting, the plot twists, the vivid portrait of a time and place in England that is far, far removed from our own. Yes, it is abridged, which saddens me, but the narrative is still rich and detailed. And Rodney Bewes does a fine job with the varied speech patterns and dialects.

Historia
The Latecomer follows the story of the wealthy, New York City-based Oppenheimer family, from the first meeting of parents Salo and Johanna, under tragic circumstances, to their triplets born during the early days of IVF. As children, the three siblings—Harrison, Lewyn, and Sally—feel no strong familial bond and cannot wait to go their separate ways, even as their father becomes more distanced and their mother more desperate. When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.

Brilliant stylist
Revisado: 01-05-23
This book is ideal for being read to, partly because of the author’s concise and witty writing. The story is wonderfully unique. I confess to having lost interest for awhile after the triplets’ arrival—they were such negative personalities when introduced that I simply became bored. The plot did, of course, pick up. One request: Every time I heard the name Goebbels mispronounced ( as Goybels) I cringed. One of the most evil characters during World War 2, he must be remembered
accurately. Please correct that!!
