How long do we have to wait for the rest of the story?!?
Revisado: 11-25-20
I found the book absolutely riveting. Obama explains many of the decisions that confused me at the time. So wonderful to hear his voice again: calm, rational and articulate. I was so disappointed when it was over. He better not keep us waiting another four years for the next volume!

Great start, downhill from there
Revisado: 08-22-20
Nathan was great, Ziggy was banal, Rachel was unattractive. I really liked use at first, then was bored, then couldn't wait for it to end. Nothing ever coalesced. Disappointing.

A very weak sequel .
Revisado: 05-16-20
The whole premise that nursing homes will leave no stone unturned to keep their Medicaid patients alive shows a shocking level of ignorance. Michael Beck's character voices are laughable. John Grisham's best days are over.

Historia
It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

What is Robert Bathurst thinking?
Revisado: 09-01-19
It’s another good Inspector Gamache novel. A main plot development, when the judge throws out the charges, would never ever happen at that point in real life and was unrealistic. It could have been handled better. One character - Homer - is completely unlikable.
While the narration is fine most of the time, the voices for multiple peripheral characters - Homer, Dominica. Carl especially - are just plain weird and very distracting. People just don’t talk like that, period. What the heck?

Historia
Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career - the successes as well as the failures - to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action.

Wonderful book, a bit idealistic and one-sided
Revisado: 03-31-19
I loved the book and the narration, and Mr. Bharara is one of my current heroes. My only criticism is that he never addressed the other, darker side of the criminal justice system. On only one occasion did he delicately reproach two policemen for a bad bust that had resulted in multiple innocent people spending 17 years in prison before being rescued by Bharara's team. In a couple of other cases he made excuses for lower level prosecutors who had declined to pursue a righteous case. That was about it on the criticism, otherwise it was all about prosecutors as 100% good guys seeking only truth and fairness no matter the cost.
While it is probably fair to say that the US Attorneys' offices are of higher quality and integrity overall than many state and local prosecutors' offices, I think there is enough verified rot at those lower levels to warrant a bit of attention even given the fact that the book was about Bharara's own experiences.

Intriguing with a few issues
Revisado: 01-31-19
I thought the reader was excellent, but the differences among most of the character voices were quite subtle (except for the demon, of course!). It would have helped if the character's name were announced at the beginning of each chapter and whenever there was a change.
A good way into the novel, just when I got really interested in the three women's stories and how they were starting to intertwine, more characters with their own first person narratives started popping up all over the place, and it got a bit confusing.
The czar and the staryk king could have both been a bit nuanced from the start, they were totally one-dimensional (read: unlikable), but I appreciated that the novel was dominated by strong female characters who stood up for themselves, and the guys finally did get to show their better sides / why they were so unpleasant.
Overall I really enjoyed the novel. I'm not usually a fantasy fan, but I decided to try something different, and I'm glad I did. I think I will give Uprooted a try.

Wonderful book beautifully read
Revisado: 12-01-18
This is a wonderful book despite the deplorable conditions and seemingly insurmountable challenges faced by the protagonist and other characters and the fact that there is a fair amount of inter-family violence. Many of the characters first appear to be absolute brutes, then turn out to caring people who simply don't have the tools to express it very well. The reader was wonderful. I couldn't put it down.

Wow. For the first chapter or two I thought it was going to be sappy, but once I got into it a bit I couldn’t stop listening. Riveting story and excellent narration. I had never heard of the Georgia Tann scandal before this, so I learned a little bit of history too. This might be my favorite book this year.

Really good novel read perfectly
Revisado: 01-09-18
I always enjoy Ms. Erdich's novels and this one was no exception. She is one of the best readers ever, and I'm sorry that she doesn't narrate other authors' work as well.
Why did I take off a star for the story? Because Peter gave LaRose instead of Maggie credit for taking the bullets out of the gun and I don't think that was ever resolved, and because toward the end there were just too many different plot lines in motion at the same time. But it is nevertheless a wonderful novel, and I highly recommend it.
