Absolutely Magical & Mesmerizing
Revisado: 03-18-25
I originally purchased this audiobook because I stumbled across it while writing a flash fiction about a hedge witch turning into a willow tree as a side effect of her use of green magic. Then I couldn’t bring myself to start it for reasons I can’t explain. But faced with a 6-hour drive I decided to give it a chance. Wow!!! This book is amazing. The writing is rich and lyrical without sacrificing compelling storytelling. The narrator is excellent. That said, when I reached my destination, I immediately downloaded the ebook because I couldn’t wait for my return drive to find out how it ended. Highly recommended!

Historia
Theo Benton decides to move to the United States to finally finish her novel, and she is soon drawn into a literary labyrinth where identity is something that can be lost and remade for the sake of sales and readership. When her mentor and lover is brutally murdered, Theo wants the killer to be found and justice to be served. But when the prime suspect turns out to be her older brother, Gus, Theo does what is necessary to protect him—to save him. Then she disappears.

I enjoyed this one … with a few caveats
Revisado: 07-09-24
I truly loved this story up until the last 10-12 chapters. I’m still giving it 4 stars because the ending doesn’t “ruin” the book and the final conclusion is satisfying. That said, everything gets a bit … overblown and “off the rails” after Chapter 30 IMO. I’m trying not to spoil anything but I think the ending could have been so much better if the solution was uncovered & resolved in a much shorter time frame (I mean the story time frame, not the pages) & without all the unnecessary world travel.

This is one of my new favorite mystery series of the past 2 years. I just discovered it. Devoured the 1st two books by "tandem reading" on Kindle/Audible. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the 3rd book and sad I have to wait over 3 months.

Historia
The options for the penniless daughter of a deceased earl are few indeed in Regency England. So, following the suspicious death of her father and the discovery that she and her much younger sister have been left without income or home, Lady Caroline takes a post as a lady's companion to the wealthy widow Frogerton. Just as Caroline is getting accustomed to her new position, her aunt, Lady Eleanor Greenwood, invites her and her employer to a house party in the countryside to celebrate her youngest daughter's birthday. But all is not well at the Greenwood estate.

Historia
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

A Deliciously Dark & Twisted Surprise
Revisado: 05-09-24
If you like The Women (the 1939 version, not the anemic 2008 remake), you’ll love this twisty multilayered novel. To be honest, I hate shows like The Real Housewives so I struggled through the early chapters of this book. That said, Rose makes two brilliant choices. (1) Framing the story with Jenny, one of the 5 POV characters and the only main character I found likable or relatable in the first 1/2 of the book, answering questions in a police interrogation room. (2) Also giving Jenny a POV/voice in the past sections of the narrative. But I swear on Joan Crawford’s eyebrows, the last 1/4 of the book makes it all worthwhile & deeply satisfying.

Swanson is the King of Empathetic Yet Morally Gray
Revisado: 03-05-24
What I adore about every Peter Swanson novel is his ability to create morally gray, yet empathetic characters. It's his superpower. This is another winner for me. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoiler any of the layers he's worked so hard to create. Just know that no one in this novel is exactly who they appear to be at the beginning.

Enlightening, Illuminating & Liberating
Revisado: 02-27-24
As an unapologetic reader & writer of genre fiction, I was shocked to learn that everything I write & most of my favorite novels feature a heroine’s journey. Suddenly everything makes sense. I feel liberated & inspired. I enjoyed the audiobook so much, I immediately purchased the ebook & physical book. Strongly recommended for any author who feels uninspired or possibly even alienated by the hero’s journey.
This is my new all-time favorite book on the craft of writing (and I own far too many books on writing). I wish I'd discovered this book when it was first released and I was still in my MFA program. It is life-changing. No, seriously. This book didn't just educate and uplift, it validated my entire writerly existence. I burst into tears while trying to navigate through hideous Atlanta traffic, but they were good tears. Cathartic tears. I didn't know what to call it. I didn't have the mythological references or the best vocabulary to explain why my stories always feature found family, plenty of dialogue, and a large cast of characters. Now I know. And I think (I hope) it will make it easier to complete my current work-in-progress and plan every future novel.
