When Hugh and Kate’s newborn son is taken to the church to be baptized, they are astounded to find that the locked font is completely dry. The possibility of a leak is quickly ruled out, and just as Hugh is beginning to wonder if there may be a sinister explanation for the stolen holy water, Father Robert is found lying motionless by the rood screen in a pool of blood.

I love listening to these stories from medieval Britain. instead of tales of famous figures from the past, we get to spend time with the common people who had to live under a feudal aristocracy. The main character is an intelligent and honorable bailiff who also acts as the doctor of the village. We see him at home and at work. I especially like the laid back tempo of the stories. They take my mind off the terrible state of the world we live in and provide a much needed respite from daily cares and obligations.

Revisado: 04-20-25
The Borderlands is a another fantastic series by Damion Hunter. The story is exciting, dramatic and full of historical detail. The characters are well realized and memorable. I was sorry that it seems there will not be a fourth book to follow. There are both men and women who play significant parts in the he story and so "Birds of Prey" will appeal to anyone who enjoys well written historical fiction based in Roman Britain.

I love this series based on two extraordinary women, friends and business partners as they deal with the events of in their own lives and help others to find love and companionship in the "Right Sort" marriage bureau which they co-own. Along the way they help with matters royal or relating to national security or Scotland Yard cases with aplomb, courage, grace, skill and intelligence.

Historia
The Borderlands aren't like anywhere else. Don't try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border - unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and - best of all as far as Elliot is concerned - mermaids. Elliot? Who's Elliot? Elliot is 13 years old. He's smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands.

Revisado: 03-25-25
The story and characters are both original and familiar at the same time. The author perfectly captures the challenges of adolescence and both the heartaches and joys of friendship and young love. A most remarkable and satisfying listen. Matthew Lloyd Davies gives a bravura performance as narrator.

Revisado: 03-24-25
I have waited a long time for a new installment from Tarquin Hall in his wonderfully entertaining and very clever Vish Puri series. The wait was well worth my patience! This is one of his best. The enjoyment is greatly enhanced by the brilliant narration and amazing versatility of Vikas Adam. The insight into the family relationships in this series is very rewarding. Highly recommend!

Gripping and breathtaking
Revisado: 01-13-25
A complex story told well. The characters are finely drawn. The writing and narration transport the listener back in time to the front lines of the Roman expansion into Germany. The author is sympathetic to both the Roman legionaries and the German tribesmen as well as their wives, lovers, and extended families. Each novel in this series is better than the one before and better than any other series I have ever read on ancient Rome.

Enjoyable until the finale
Revisado: 01-06-25
This latest installment of Darcie Wilde's useful woman series was made more interesting because it is based on a true historical situation. However, the unconvincing ending and one key point that was not cleared up made for a rather disappointing conclusion. I hope the next installment will be less contrived and more believable.

Wonderful tale of love and courage
Revisado: 12-31-24
This is a brilliantly crafted novel, a complex tale of the life of a Roman military family and the mores and traditions of the Roman Empire in the first century AD. But it also describes the Germanic tribes who opposed the Roman advance into their homelands. Thrilling and engaging from start to finish. The narrator is outstanding as well.
