when you try so hard you fall flat
Revisado: 04-27-25
This is what you get when an author tries too hard to make their writing style unique and a narrator who tries to hard to sound memorable. Mitchell is tolerable to listen to in path of the berserker because it's a xianxia cultivation world where everyone sounding like an old Asian person or whiny asian noble trying to speak English makes sense. In this case it's just annoying and grating to the ears. Combine that with JD's attempt to create an MC that is a cold and calculating killer but then immediately falls in love while ignoring all loot and stumbling through every encounter barely surviving... and you get the immensely rare book where I won't go on to read the rest of the series. At least not until I get absurdly bored.

Historia
In just seven days, the world will crumble. The System's Descent will usher in a new era of chaos: wild animals mutating, monstrous creatures emerging, and the cessation of modern technology. Humanity will be left defenseless. Drew Wright knows none of this. At least not until he is rudely ripped from his bed and thrust into a white room to undergo a taser-happy ‘Tutorial’. Turns out, he is one of a thousand randomly selected people to be forewarned of the approaching apocalypse. Now, he faces the delightful task of convincing his wife and mother of the devastation hurtling towards them.

hilarious and enjoyable
Revisado: 01-15-25
This is a fun read, I especially love the subtle/not so subtle jab at kyle kirrin (love his books). Very fun read, the only thing I didn't like was the discrepancy between not allowing AR15s to work then just having the system let bolt action rifles work. There's really not much difference. Definitely worth reading. Poor Frank, he just enjoys his bubbly beers!

needs to get back on track
Revisado: 12-02-24
Started out as good as the first book and is still enjoyable. However, the author has the characters go off on so many tangents that the storyline basically doesn't progress at all. This is fine in doses to lengthen series and get more books in and all. i get it... but too much is too much. The book needs to make some progress.
Too much dialogue between the clones. That whole section was just a waste of time.

Good, but the narrative barely moves forward
Revisado: 10-22-24
I don't mind slow series that include lots of detail (DOTF, HWFWM, Wandering Inn to name some), love them sometimes. The story is great here and I like the characters. That said the author needs to move the narrative along at least some and stop having characters think through the same sentences on repeat rather than taking any action. I get trying to extend books to have more to write in the series, please find a better balance though.

Writing of a High Schooler or worse
Revisado: 01-02-24
The MC is consistently touted as a PHD tier scientist but is written with the intelligence and development of a high school dropout gym bro. The humor is childish and barely funny, the system is poorly developed and poorly written. Having read almost all other LitRPG series out at the moment i was trying to find a new one to go through. I almost never stop reading and return a book but this one I decided to pass on about halfway through. Lazy writing.

Historia
An AI calling itself Schema has assimilated Earth into its System. As a consequence, everyone gained access to status screens, power-ups, and skills. This AI turned these concepts from fiction to fact. It's easy to become intoxicated with leveling up and becoming stronger. To some, it's too good to be true, like living out a dream. For Daniel, however, it's closer to a nightmare.

Not great when compared to its peers

Historia
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Most idiotic, overly obnoxious, moralistic MCs ever
Revisado: 06-16-23
I finished the book by forcing myself to keep going because the world is interesting. However, in the uncountable number of books I've read and listened to I have never seen less likeable main characters. Both Erin and Ryoka are simply unbearable. Erin is moralistic and lacking in any form of common sense to a degree that just lacks any amount of tolerability but she still somehow fails into successfully surviving. it's a joke. Ryoka is just so profoundly spiteful, arrogant, and unlikeable that it just boggles the mind. I get trying to write a broken character so there can be growth but it's just absurd. Then on top of it all the reader barely gets to conceptualize the leveling or class system from a personal perspective because Ryoka thinks she's too good to even use the system in the world she's in. Despite that she still is somehow sooo incredible that she beats up on high level adventurers in armor etc. its absurd. I get girl power and all that but it's to a point where it just becomes idiotic. if I continue the series it's in a hope the two MCs die and to see the world's development.
Edit: If you stick with the story it becomes vastly better, Though Erin is still far too unreasonable.

Great Series, Frustrating Book
Revisado: 05-23-23
I have loved this series, that's why it came as such a shock that this book was so frustrating. Kong chooses to write lengthy narratives of what Richter is thinking, making seconds in the books world take an hour of the book to get through. It becomes such a slog that it is almost an unbearable read. I am almost done with the book and Richter has barely moved a couple hours forward. I can't wait for future books but I hope the author spends less time re explaining mechanics of the land and more time moving the dang story forward.
