Historia
When Sandra Leigh was seven years old, she fell into the role of protector of her mother and three younger siblings. One winter night, she ushered her mother out of the house during one of her father’s tirades, and then snuck her back into the dark home through a window. Sandra was used to events like these; what she wasn’t used to were the mountains and nature surrounding her new home in West Virginia.

Perhaps better to read, but no way I'm buying it. I avoid all the drama on the internet, why am I listening to hours and hours of it to get through a book! Neverending.

Malevolent, unstoppable killer

It really got old fast that this beast could take down vehicles and go through oak doors and evidently had to eat often and a lot. Over the top and I was tired of it quickly.

Historia
Jellyfish are an enigma. They have no centralized brain, but they see and feel and react to their environment in complex ways. They look simple, yet their propulsion systems are so advanced that engineers are just learning how to mimic them. They produce some of the deadliest toxins on the planet and still remain undeniably alluring. Long ignored by science, they may be a key to ecosystem stability. Juli Berwald's journey into the world of jellyfish is a personal one.

Love this book

Any additional comments?
I wasn't sure I would be able to listen to the book at first. The author reads it instead of a professional and drove me crazy at first with strange pauses. She has a good voice and projects her enthusiasm for the subject and after a few pages I was hooked on the book and not worrying about the reading. I love science books about living creatures but had no idea this subject has so much interesting information. Great book!

What a wonderful combination of story and reader!
Revisado: 08-14-14
What about Ellen Archer’s performance did you like?
She has a wonderful voice and seemed to nail each character with regional variations and tone.
Any additional comments?
I didn't expect to enjoy this audio book as much as I did. We've been watching the series "Case Histories" on PBS and enjoyed that, but the audio book is much better! Ellen Archer's reading is just delightful, she brings the characters to life. I think seeing the series actually helped; the characters were well cast and meshed with the reading but the increased depth and the changes from the books to the series kept things fresh.

Historia
Waterhouse leads a quiet, ordered life as a retired police detective - a life that takes a surprising turn when she encounters Kelly Cross, a habitual offender, dragging a young child through town. Both appear miserable and better off without each other-or so decides Tracy, in a snap decision that surprises herself as much as Kelly. Suddenly burdened with a small child, Tracy soon learns her parental inexperience is actually the least of her problems, as much larger ones loom for her and her young charge.

Kept putting me to sleep; edit: now I love it!
Revisado: 08-14-14
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed Case Histories show on PBS the last two years so decided on a whim to download When Will There Be Good News and was surprised at the depth the show had to leave out. I thoroughly enjoyed that book and was very impressed with that reader, so I downloaded the other two available titles in the series. I was really looking forward to this as it's the only one that would be completely new as the others were dramatized in the TV series. I don't know if this book is that much duller or if I don't react as well to the reader, but it was quite a let down. I'll probably try again soon to see if I was just not in the right mood or was too tired when I tried to listen.
Edit:
Second listen was much better; it's now a go-to when I need something relaxing and fun. I love Atkinson's humor and seem to pick up something new each time I listen. Strange, since I relisten to books when I need something without having to pay close attention.

One of my favorites.
Revisado: 05-07-12
Would you listen to The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul again? Why?
Douglas Adams has such a unique point of view, I wish there were more Dirk Gently tales.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I can't choose my favorite character, I love them all. Kate is a great protagonist and Toe Rag is the perfect little troll.
Any additional comments?
Nothing deep about this book, but very entertaining, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it more than once.

Excellent story well read.
Revisado: 03-23-09
Four generations are linked in this engrossing tale, and I enjoyed all of the characters and places. The movement between times and places was disconcerting at first, but I shortly got used to the jumps. I was totally drawn into the story, it drove me to exercise more in order to listen more. I expect to listen again soon, I think even my husband will like this one so we'll listen on our next trip.
