Right season of my life

I'm a new parent. Listening to this book makes me appreciate the gift of my own little soon-to-be toddler. I recommend this book because there is so much creativity and life in it. I'm glad Neil Gaiman finished writing it. It makes me realize that writing really is an act of generosity to readers. I'm sure this is the first time on my life a book made me feel such gratitude for the tenacity of the writer. Thank you, Neil Gaiman and the whole cast who performed this book, for creating such a treasure.

Engaging and the seams show

The book was an engaging listen. At times I could feel the writer plodding his way through the middle bits and it made me like the text more. The story is wabi-sabi in spots; for example, when one detective asks another to Google a crime location. The aspect of the story that felt unnecessary was the heroin addiction link between the killer's deceased sister and Mia's deceased sister. Nonetheless, I will seek out other books by Bjork. The narrator made the book sing!

Cheesy and slow

I typically enjoy Koontz and paranormal thrillers. However, I struggled to finish this book. It was way too earnest for me. Chastity was overused thematically. The satanistic cult plot is comically thin. The tarantula and dead body scene at the abandoned hotel was laughable, rather than frightening. The narrator's performance and the familial backstory for the protagonist salvaged the book for me.

The first five minutes don't do the story justice, but the plot built in away that ended up gripping my attention. The conclusion was satisfying.

Devoted to science

I appreciated the story of Marie Sklodowska Curie's schooling, life, and work. I wanted more about her research, her siblings, and her best friend at the Sorbonne. The love story between Pierre Curie and her was unexpected and the focus of this brief Audible Original.
