More of the same, great characters, fluid and enjoyable writing, and a plot that keeps you glued to the earbuds.

Abercrombie is a very talented writer-- one of my favorites--who has the ability to cynically enter while bringing new and varied characters to life. in this novel he takes on the story of Cole Shivers, a Northman who had a peripheral role in the first trilogy. Shivers
moved down to Styria in a quest to become a better man. instead, he ends up becoming an increasingly more ruthless killer while working for a woman who is burning down a kingdom in pursuit of revenge.
The voice acting is flawless like usual, but there are problems with the story that affect it negatively and keep it from being great. First, Abercrombie creates a female character that is the least likeable in the whole story, and had me wishing she would die throughout, while knowing she would prevail. The best character of the book by far, an assassin poisoner, died while
Secondly, Shivers changes from naive to evil through the whole book, which had me wondering why I waded through it. what is the purpose of a story where good guys are stupid and everyone else is evil?
Anyway, the author is witty and amusing as always, but this is not his best work.

This book was to me a big disappointment, even though it had many good points. First, the good: the main character is presented as a mage in a small village, who moved there after serving time in the military in order to settle down and enjoy his life. The narrator is very good, and makes the man likable and somewhat humble. It also is an interesting world that the author portrays, and he fleshed out the history of the area with such rigor that it is pretty obvious there is a great deal of thought put into the structure and scope of the story.
The problems with the world are thus quite Stark, in that I found myself questioning the balance of magic throughout the whole book. The mage attains a single shard of an extremely rare gem that is said to be worth a whole kingdom in value. In fact, this single shard is said to be enough of a powerful item that it would be able to take on a whole kingdom of soldiers. it became a surprise thereafter for me when the mage finds many more shards and begins handing it out to his 19 Magi subordinates. They then began taking on a force of 100000 goblins, and the author admits they would be able to match such an enemy, except that the goblins have a god on their side that forces the mages to flee. We all know this is a fantasy book, but doomsday magic that allows magi to anniahlate whole armies kind of kills the suspense for me.
Additionally, the story is full of sex and the main character makes the subject a focus of the book. Imagine a story where a main character has to power a portal to save thousands of people by screwing his ex-girlfriend for hours on end! This "sex magic" is inventive, but unless you are 14 years old, it is rather stupid.
Finally, the story has elves, but calls them tree people (and another name I forgot). Please, just call them elves!
All in all, there is too much that is annoying for me to recommend.

Getting kind of stupid

I'll keep it short: this story is getting boring and kind of stupid. I'm really trying to make it through the whole series, but will perhaps not make it. Pony is becoming a small God by killing scores of bad guys with her unstoppable magic, and the hours and hours of weak monks getting wiped out by their evil overlords in an extensive political struggle is unbelievably boring. I wish Salvatore would understand that making his main characters ridiculously powerful, and his story lines about and evil church perverting all around them (seems to closely mirror the Catholic church by the way) reveals much about his own politics, and at the same time is boring as hell. Oh well, I hope the next book is able to keep me on board.

Just got through with this extremely looong book, and have to say that it was truly superb. I've never read the author before, and was pleasantly surprised with his style and story-line, as well as his wonderful descriptions.

The gist of the story is that the main hero Falco lives in a world that is besieged by demons and their armies of reanimated victims, or "possessed." In this world the demons that lead the armies of possessed are invulnerable to anything but battlemages, that are specially trained mages that are the only ones capable of fighting such evil beings.

The battlemages usually use dragons as their mounts, and I have to say that the way the story of how this develops is a truly unique and interesting story, one that the author should be congratulated for inventing.

The only downside is it seems kind of limiting to basically leave the fate of mankind (or dragonkind for that matter) to just a few battle mages, while the rest of humanity has no chance whatsoever to resist the demons. I found myself over and over wondering why the beasts are so powerful in comparison to the human opponents who immediately collapse when faced with them, and thought the notion kind of ridiculous.

The reader is superb, and truly gifted, so you will not be disappointed with that aspect of the production. I hope to read more of the author in the future.

I liked the first 2 novels, as I found that Eric and Gabriel were interesting and believable. Now, they have morphed into super-humans that wipe out hordes of bad humans with little danger to themselves. In two separate firefights the heros wipe out about 50 living and armed opponents with ease, and I just had to turn off the book--it was too stupid to be entertaining.
The new narrator is definitely not as good as the original, but the content of the book made it a crime to continue.

Salvatore has made another work worth reading, but there is an issue I am having with the main character, drizzt. He is spending all of his time with a female elf, dahlia, who is really annoying. It is hard to like this character, and it is my hope salvatore kills the worthless wench off before too long.

Without spoilers, it is hard to do the book justice, but suffice it to say that this provides a proper and entertaining end to the trilogy. Drizzt is his normally contemplative self, and you even get the entry here of Catterly from another of Salvatore's series of books. The narration is also quite good, every bit as good as Bevine, so you can trust that aspect of the book as well.

This was a good story that follows our Drow friend Drizzt on a trek across the world and involves the city Luscan being the most important center of attention throughout. I found the action pretty good and the characters interesting but the way that Salvatore makes Duedrmont (don't know to spell his name, as I only listen) seem like he is a complete imbecile who cannot do anything right or anticipate anything takes the air out of the climax. Simply put, the story makes the good guy an idiot who is destined to fail, while filling in most of the story with evil and capable opponents. I won't say how it ends, but it was not satisfying.
