Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Absolutely amazing

Stick with it through the beginning then check out the David Copperfield parallels. Kingsolver knows how to weave a tale and shine a light on the national crisis of opioid addiction. Worth ever credit and every minute invested in listening.

Historia
Joe DeMarco likes to call himself a troubleshooter. It sounds better than “bagman” or “fixer.” With more than a decade of troubleshooting under his belt on behalf of John Mahoney, the Speaker of the House, DeMarco has seen his fair share of dangerous situations. When Andie Moore, a twenty-three-year-old working in the DOJ’s Inspector General’s Office, is murdered in cold blood in Florida’s Everglades, it falls on DeMarco to get to the bottom of things.

I thoroughly enjoyed this DeMarco book. All the favorite characters are back and the plot was interesting. This was a light read, to be enjoyed while having a beer and watching the sunset.

Historia
Nola Leary would have been content to stay in Kilcairy, Ireland, healing villagers at her family’s clinic with a mix of magic and modern medicine. But a series of ill-timed omens and a deathbed promise to her grandmother have sent her on a quest to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to secure her family’s magical potency for the next generation. Her supernatural task? To unearth four artifacts hidden by her grandfather before a rival magical family beats her to it. Complication One: The artifacts are lost somewhere in vampire Jane Jameson’s occult bookshop. Complication Two: Her new neighbor, Jed Trudeau, keeps turning up half-naked at the strangest times....

Enjoyed it but not Harper’s best
Revisado: 07-19-22
This was a decent story but not as clever as some of her other Half Moon Hollow books. I agree that the narrator was a bit tricky to listen to in the beginning, but once the main character’s back story was revealed, it made sense.

Time doesn't always heal wounds, and no one knows that better than Angel Conrad. When she left her hometown in Oklahoma, she never expected to see it again. There was nothing there for her anymore: The love of her life had left her for someone else - not to mention the baby she'd been keeping a secret. Now she's headed back to Oklahoma to prove that she deserves to be the last one laughing.

Simply awful
Revisado: 06-30-22
I couldn’t wait for it to end. I kept hoping SOMETHING would happen. It didn’t. I love Carolyn Brown stories. They are usually sweet, with likable characters. The characters in this book are one dimensional and too good to be true.
The narrator was ok with female voices but the male characters were difficult to listen to.
Skip this one and try another Carolyn Brown book.

So many characters, so many mundane details
Revisado: 01-15-22
I loved the previous books and I was even content to slog through all the boring parts because it felt like the story was going somewhere. With this one, however, the story went in too many directions to actually feel like there was a coherent plot line. Towards the end, the story picked up, but there was a lot of pummeling of willow bark and spilled brandy in between.

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Simply beautiful

Although I understand the reviews that said the book is depressing and repetitive, I feel the need to encourage readers to stick with it and let it simmer like a tasty stew. I thought about abandoning the story a few times in the beginning of the book, but I’m so happy I stuck with it.
This is an uplifting, delightful, and at times, laugh out loud funny story of the human experience. Highly recommend.

Historia
After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Story, narration and pacing was just perfect. I wasn’t ready to listen to this one for a while, so it sat in my library for a few years. In these days of uncertainty, it brought me back to what really matters— love and family. Well worth a listen.

I’ve always loved the DeMarco series but I was not impressed with the past two stories. This one was a fun listen. It had action, humor, and best of all, Emma. You don’t have to read the previous books to enjoy this one so give it a shot. You won’t regret it.

Ridiculous ending
Revisado: 07-05-19
I thoroughly enjoyed the book with the exception of the last hour. The story was engaging but the last chapter was probably one of the most boring chapters I have ever heard. I’m sure some would disagree, those that enjoy British legal dramas perhaps. But ugh, it was soooo long and did not resolve the story. I would have rated this 5 stars but I feel cheated by the ending.
Performances were very good, but I found Fox’s attempts at an American accent were painful.
