Historia
Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down. A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs. But on this server, they don't care about the game. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain.

Having been around LitRPG for a while I know that when people say books are ‘dark’ it’s usually over exaggerated. The Land and UnderVerse for example are often said to be dark and I find them both relaxing reading. Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon is one of those books which are supposed to be super dark and/or disturbing. For the majority of the book it wasn’t anywhere as heavy as I was led to expect but as usual Matt Dinniman delivered in the last two chapters. The book starts off with an interesting premise, and the MC gets trapped in a digital world with a bunch of whackos and can’t get out. The story leads in the vaguely expected direction for most of it but some of the plot twists are just perfect. The last two chapters and the ending are some of the best emotional portrayal I’ve ever read (listened).
Characters:
Duke is very well written, and acts in a believable and well constructed way. He starts off as a panicked and confused person before going through several severe emotional changes as he experiences major emotional events. The ending of the story shows him in a way that greatly contrasts with the beginning and is very well portrayed.
Clara is shown from the start to be some level of insane, combining a degree of multiple personality disorder and some form of warped perception of her surroundings and pure madness. Her character develops brilliantly, showing cracks at the edges, while also displaying her various personalities in a revealing light, depending on what the scenario forces to show. Her portrayal at the end is a culmination of all the hints and factors throughout the whole book, leaving a sense of ‘oh, so THAT’S what was happening’.
Side and supporting characters:
Beyond mentioning that they are all well written, and well developed, the side character are impressively three dimensional, especially given the length of this book. Some of particular note are Banksy, Jank and Anatoli.
The narrator, Joe Hempel, was a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of them before so I wasn’t expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed but the quality of voice and general narration. Joe is a narrator who I would happily listened to books from in the future.
All in all, 10/10 for story (I can’t go higher than 10), 9.5/10 for Narration (that pronunciation of mana loses a 0.5 by default) and a 10/10 for overall.
