Interesting and Relevant History
Revisado: 09-15-24
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the book and enjoyed learning more details about the authors we've all read in school. The book struggles in the same way that all books which tackle such large topics do; that is the struggle with become tedious halfway through. However, White did well maintaining his pace and focus throughout. I think as a society and as a country we would all do well to remember and learn from both the good and the bad of the cold war as the challenges of social media and AI lead many to desire more censorship.

Historia
A fictional portrayal of an aging revolutionary, this novel is a powerful commentary on the nightmare politics of the troubled 20th century. Born in Hungary in 1905, a defector from the Communist Party in 1938, and then arrested in both Spain and France for his political views, Arthur Koestler writes from a wealth of personal experience.

well written and entertaining
Revisado: 08-31-24
Given Koestler's history he could have easily written a memoir or a history book. But Darkness at Noon accomplishes what no memoir or history book can do. Koestler's literary works defeat collectivism and totalitarianism philosophically and intellectually while at the same time taking the reader on a personal journey. I don't enjoy every book I read but this one was quite entertaining.

Cool anecdotes but not a history
Revisado: 06-29-24
I wasn't expecting a comprehensive history of the Vanderbuilts but I was definitely expecting more of an effort. all the book provides are interesting anecdotes and minor details from a handful of the Vanderbilts lives and parties. While I realize that historians are limited by thier sources the book almost completely glosses over the Commodore's meteoric rise and presents only a cartoon version of many of the people. The books redeeming quality is that the author really bring many of the places and events to life through descriptive writing.

I've read a lot of motivational books, and while this book contains a lot of wisdom I finished feeling underwhelmed. I guess the author doesn't add anything new to the conversation, and the writing style isn't very engaging. I know many people who would benefit from this book, but it definitely wouldn't be my first recommendation.

Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

A very interesting history, some of which American history tends to overlook. Definitely felt that the author had an agenda. But overall an important history to understand, especially those who work for the federal government

Historia
Invariably, armies are accused of preparing to fight the previous war. In Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Nagl—a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and the conflict in Iraq—considers the now crucial question of how armies adapt to changing circumstances during the course of conflicts for which they are initially unprepared.

Lessons we still haven't learned for 500 Alex
Revisado: 08-31-23
Lethality is important but so is understanding your operational environment. If the Army cannot learn to adapt to the political nature of war (whether in LSCO or COIN) than the Army will continue to flounder in foreign conflict. A good read that should be discussed more in military circles. Large scale combat operations and counter insurgency operations are not mutually exclusive. The military needs to be prepared for both.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

I've been making my way through a lot of the classics and have not enjoyed many of them. I came into this worried that I might encounter another dull and tedious book. But, to the contrary I truly enjoyed the book and appreciated the story and the philosophy.
I understand why collectivists hate this book. it was a brutal destruction of their ideology.

In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.
