Boring, Meandering Mess
Revisado: 03-02-25
I am a huge Sanderson fan and really enjoyed The Stormlight Archive until this installment. This book really amounted to 60 plus hours of therapy sessions that really needed a huge edit. I was completely bored with it and ultimately did not care what happened to the characters. I am very sad to say that I may not continue with the series.

Historia
Long ago, the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south, the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar, the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years, it has begun to quicken again.

Felt like it dragged
Revisado: 04-26-20
I like the story but it just felt long and drawn out. Unfortunately, I found that I really did not care about any of the characters so if there was a dangerous situation it just did not matter if it looked like a main character was potentially going to die. Half way through the third book I was about to give up but instead downloaded the kindle version (Kindle Unlimited) and then I was able to essentially go through the rest of book fairly quickly.

Could not finish
Revisado: 02-29-20
I found the first book to be entertaining enough to buy the second audio book. However, it just became too painful to finish - I made it not quite 1/2 way through. I am sorry but this book was just a non-stop adolescent whine fest. I actually really enjoy YA, coming of age fantasy books but I do not get how anyone listening could find Riven entertaining.
Don't trust my opinion? Go ahead and read the free sample on Amazon for the Kindle version. The whining in the sample persisted throughout my listening experience. Like I said, painful.
Oh, and if I had to listen to someone shout "Shyneo" one more time . . . well, you get the point.

So Annoying!
Revisado: 12-12-18
Full disclosure here. I have not yet finished listening and may revisit my rating when I do but this is the most frustrating story that I have read in quite some time that I had to post a review early. How many times do we have Kael just miss finding Ember and Max? Oh, don't look over there where your wife just got knocked out or in the tent where your friend is unconscious. Or better yet, let's have the person who is going to yell your name just happen to get hit with a poison dart as she gets the first syllable out. What complete nonsense.
And don't get me started on how the book somehow turned into the young adult Twilight romance saga with a little bit of erotica tossed in. What is going on here?
This is just a small sampling of the frustration experienced when listening to this book. If it weren't for how much I enjoyed the first book, I would quit right now and ask Audible for my money back. However, I will still see if I can finish.

The wrong kind of "fantasy"
Revisado: 07-12-18
The book should have been classified under "sexual fantasy." I wish I would have read the reviews before wasting a credit on this book. The graphic sex was so over the top and senseless that I gave up pretty early on. I am not a prude but graphic gratuitous lengthy sex scenes is just not why I listen to fantasy novels. Very frustrating.

This is a great side story that is also somewhat necessary to Oathbringer to get a full appreciation for everything going on. Lift is great!

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

15 Hours of Backstory
Revisado: 10-20-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Wow, this book was very slow and difficult to finish. I do not understand where all of these high ratings are coming from. It's almost as if I listened to a different book. I kept waiting for something to happen only to find out toward the end that most of the book was just background.
Seriously, nothing actually happened in this story. You could read the supplemental information that came with the audiobook, along with the book description, and be ready to listen to book 2. However, there's not a chance of me moving on to the next book.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-25-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have enjoyed the series but this book was just dull and unnecessarily loaded with a multitude of POVs. For example, did we really need the POV of a reporter going around interviewing people? The story was just so disjointed and scattered that it ultimately felt like nothing really happened. The whole book could have been told in one or two chapters.

Any additional comments?
What happened to the good story? I understand the characters in the story are young, but did we really need a book with dialogue that consisted of non-stop bickering and yelling at one another?I really had high hopes for the series after listening to the first book and you cannot blame it on the narrator. This was basically a book of filler that could have consisted of one or two chapters in the concluding volume. I am going to have to really see some stellar reviews of the third book when it comes out to convince me to continue the story.

Very well done new epic fantasy.
Revisado: 10-23-14
What did you like best about this story?
I was hesitant in picking up this book as there were a number of five star ratings from reviewers that had never reviewed a fantasy novel before so I was a bit sketpical. However, ultimately I went ahead and took the plunge and am very glad that I did. This is not a short book by any stretch but the story seemed to grip you from the beginning, with plenty of action and character develpment to make it quite a page turner.
There were not too many PoV characters, which made it fairly easy to keep track of the story, even though we were not spoon fed the world's history and magic system. Basically, there was enough complexity and scope to really make me believe the series will deserve the epic fantasy classification.
I highly recommend Circle of Reign to any fans of the fantasy genre and cannot wait until book 2 comes out.
