Historia
Knapp draws on his own experience of losing both his first and second wife to cancer to provide insight into some of the unhelpful responses we often make, and presents a repertoire of ideas on how to be a genuine friend and helper to a grieving person. Various chapters in the book deal with different kinds of losses, including the trauma of losing a spouse or child, divorce, loss of pets, and other losses that we sometimes fail to recognize need to be grieved over if healing is to occur.

What did you love best about I Didn't Know What to Say?
This is the first book I listened to because it's the only one that directly indicated that it was for the grievers supporting network.
I'm the mother of a daughter who lost a husband that she had for less than 1 year of marriage; she is grieving hard and I'm as lost as she is.
To Mr. Knapp: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for sharing this. I'm not a religious practicing person and could not relate to the bible chapter on the help you found, and appreciate that you kept the religious aspect to a minimum through the rest of the material, as it was invaluable help and so appreciated.
It helped to hear the griever's perception on certain lines of comments. I will no doubt still make mistakes but at least I have some help to be better.

Read with perfect energy for this kind of subject. The book itself, I found to be an encouraging example of the wonder of people sharing what they feel may be useful to others, even though I'm sure a vacation would have been more relaxing. Thank you for this heartfelt sharing on a subject where the heart is likely considered out of place.

Wisdom, a gentle offering
Revisado: 05-20-16
Personally I appreciated the calmness in the telling. A well sifted sharing of experiences from our wise, often dismissed elderly. Subtle and yet powerfully thought provoking. Thank you for the insights that can be savoured and immensely appreciated earlier rather than seeing it so much later. Sincerely, thank you.

I wanted to 'hear' the 'councillor', the narrator is just not playing the part. The information is good but I find my mind wondering off...I will probably get the book from the library.

Really enjoyed the author's down-to-earth, this is who I am and why I love what I do unpretentiousness. He is encouraging and honest at the same time...sometimes you just need to 'get over it and get on with it'. I will be listening to this more than once!

Historia
When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have... and you may find one day that you have less than you think").
