Historia
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Thoughtful background
Revisado: 12-08-24
The complex explanations about every action, description and thought might seem to others to make this a slow read, but I have learned to appreciate Smith’s detailed observations. It makes for a rich tapestry, especially when narrated by Gildart Jackson.

Weird accent on son
Revisado: 11-27-24
Not bad but rather predictable for a novella. Very odd accent on son, considering hhis parents’ accents do not match.

First in Fenella Sallow detective series. Well plotted, good character development with one exception, looking forward to the future of detectives, warm atmosphere. The only jarring unit was the over-the-top and unbelievable nastiness of the superintendent.

Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

Elderly sleaze and stupid decisions
Revisado: 01-07-24
I have loved Richard Russo’s books for years, but this one is just filled with older men and women trying to find solace for their bleak lives in a series of bed-hopping, no matter who it hurts or how little joy is achieved. Can’t believe I am going to give myself permission not to read a Russo book to the end, but I am. And I won’t pick up the other two books in the trilogy. I just don’t care about any of the characters, even ones we’ve met before.

Explains a lot
Revisado: 07-14-23
This volume explains a lot in the Logan/Hoom series. I love the detailed asides, which originally seemed a hit tedious, but are actually filled with humor and personality revelation.

When the remains of a brutally murdered young woman are left hanging from the Glenfinnan Monument in the Highlands of Scotland, DCI Jack Logan and his Major Investigations team are dispatched to investigate. At first, the case appears to be fairly open and shut. But, as evidence mounts, Jack uncovers some shocking truths about the victim that risk turning the investigation into a potentially explosive international incident.

Series gets better and better
Revisado: 03-07-23
This series just gets better and better. The last two were a bit mawkish and I found it difficult to believe that the main character, a DI in her 40s, could be so romantically adolescent, but in this story Claire comes into her own. Can’t wait for the next novel.

There, she is introduced to ethical hacker Gayle Crichton and told about a critical security breach coming from inside Police Scotland. Clare already has her hands full keeping a key witness under protection and investigating the murder of a university student. When a friend of the victim is found preparing to jump off the Tay Road Bridge, it is clear he is terrified of someone.

Implausible and adolescent, not up to the first two books
Revisado: 02-15-23
I have enjoyed the series thus far, but this installment is a bit far fetched in plot and adolescent in its romantic angles. I do hope this isn’t the new direction for the rest of the series.

Historia
When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family’s Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of ten, the offender is someone close to home. And Daisy’s family is certainly strange—her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning. And then there’s Daisy’s little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative . . .

Outstanding with tantalizing hints for the future
Revisado: 02-04-23
While I dearly love DC Smith and his whole crew, I am enjoying the dynamic between Emily Willows and Summer Lane, especially as Emily is not consigned to the backwater of cozy elderly widow, but shows hidden depths, and there were tantalizing hints of developments to come. Live long and prosper, Peter Grainger, and thank you; we need many more books from you. The narrator’s rather stiff staccato takes a bit of getting used to, but in the end one can’t imagine anyone else for the job.
