NOPE.... I'm returning the book.
Revisado: 10-22-19
Let's say that it's just NOT for me. Old Hollywood and Hollywood history is something that I'm really interested in, but this book is not. It was supposed to be about EH's seven husbands and cinema history, but it's about something entirely different and it bores me to death. I prefer Karina Longworth's podcast "You Must Remember This" thousands and thousands time again over this. Ok...there are readers who will find it great and probably that's enough for the destiny of this book, but since I have no interest in revisiting this title ever again, I'm returning the book!

It was a period of decadence and excess as Berliners - after the terrible slaughter of WWI and the hardships that followed - are enjoying their own version of Babylon. Bernie is a young detective working in Vice when he gets a summons from Bernard Weiss, Chief of Berlin's Criminal Police. He invites Bernie to join KIA - Criminal Inspection A - the supervisory body for all homicide investigation in Kripo.

Good-bye, Mr. Kerr!
Revisado: 05-14-19
I am sad that the story of Bernie Gunther has come to an end and there are going to be no more books. In my opinion, this last adventure is not as strong as some former ones, but it's full of nostalgia and some clever worded advice. Life is about moving on no matter how hard it is and this should be the grand lesson for the whole series. Thank you, Mr. Kerr!

I loved this book and I also made my dog happy!
Revisado: 05-10-19
This book has been my faithful companion for a week on my daily walks with my dog. It was the reason (besides making my dog happy) I couldn't wait to get outside of the house. I loved the story overall. I admit it took me some time to get into it but I'm glad I continued for it developed in such a captivating manner I could not resist it. I love the coming of age stories, I love history, I love stories with dogs (among other wonderful characters there is a dog in it too!). The narration was very good although I listened at a speed of X1.25, for I felt it more engaging this way.
I will definitely check other titles written by the same author and most surely will revisit the book in a while!

Historia
On a freezing night in January 1941, a little Jewish girl is found on the steps of an apartment building in Bucharest. With Romania recently allied with the Nazis, the Jewish population is in grave danger, undergoing increasingly violent persecution. The girl is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy, childless couple who name her Natalia. As she assimilates into her new life, she all but forgets the parents who were forced to leave her behind. They are even further from her mind when Romania falls under Soviet occupation.

I cried and cried...
Revisado: 01-23-19
As a Romanian, I was curious about this story, especially since it dealt with a period so difficult in the history of my country. I did not regret a second adding this title to my audiobook list. More than that, and in all sincerity, I do not recall a book that has made me cry so much throughout the reading. The emotion of having the people - grandparents, great-great parents, now lost forever - come back once again to life... priceless. So many emotions I have felt, so many people lost in the brutal machine of the history I knew... so many destinies changed without compassion.
As someone who currently lives in Bucharest, I imagined the map described by the author in the book, and what a journey it has been! Almost all the places in the book have suffered along the years alterations that have mutilated the beauty of the city and I have no words to describe the regret I feel that my Bucharest has lost that elegance that it once held. Except for a couple of times, the narrator pronounced the titles and names of the places correctly, I know it is not an easy language, especially for someone foreign.
My favourite characters were indubitably Anton and Despina, I've "seen" them along the years in the city - I must say that fewer and fewer are left nowadays -, so quiet, so dignified, even in their walk. As far as the story is concerned, I wish, wish, wish that they had reunited (in fiction) with their daughter for a complete forever after. I know what it feels like to be away from parents, from the loved ones. I must say I did not care much about the love story with Victor - he was still part of a hideous regime -, but I totally understand the idea behind it.
I am grateful also to Roxanne V. for her approach of a theme that has so rarely been seen in print: the selling of the Jewish people by the Romanian Communist State. It is a shame what happened! Bravo, Roxanne V.!
All in all, The Girl They Left behind will remain in my heart for a long time and I hope to read more books from this author. Thank you!

Historia
In 1940, 18-year old Juliet Armstrong is reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage. Sent to an obscure department of MI5 tasked with monitoring the comings and goings of British Fascist sympathisers, she discovers the work to be by turns both tedious and terrifying. But after the war has ended, she presumes the events of those years have been relegated to the past for ever. Ten years later, now a producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, on a different battleground, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat.

Revisado: 01-20-19
Well, most surely I did not expect to like this book this much! Although it can be described as an espionage novel (While/Post WW2 espionage - Cold War), it is so much more. With wonderful writing, humorous at times, this book addresses many important topics, some of them very close to my heart. I found it a complete joy to listen to. And I intend to listen to it again. And the performance... yes! After this, it has become clear to me that I prefer British narrators, the performance is always exquisite! Almost all my favourite audiobooks I've purchased on Audible have been narrated by British voices. So, so, so good!

Historia
The last person Alice Shipley expected to see since arriving in Tangier with her new husband was Lucy Mason. After the accident at Bennington, the two friends - once inseparable roommates - haven't spoken in over a year. Lucy - always fearless and independent - helps Alice emerge from her flat and explore the country. But soon a familiar feeling starts to overtake Alice - she feels controlled and stifled by Lucy at every turn. Then Alice's husband, John, goes missing, and Alice starts to question everything around her.

Better the devil you know, they say. But remember

Any additional comments?
...it's still the Devil.
"Tangerine" has been among my first acquisitions of books I knew nothing about. As a non-native English speaker, I tend to choose my audiobooks based on how familiar I am with the story just to ease my listening experience. I chose "Tangerine" because I liked the premise of it; the idea of an unreliable narrator in an exotic land sprinkled with the promise of Gothic elements was too alluring for me. Having now finished the audiobook, I say that it's been quite a pleasant experience - in fact, I listened to the book in a day. I liked it, yet, to be honest, it has left me somewhat frustrated. It's hard to give further details without giving away parts of the story, but I will say this, some characters seem "to be born" under a particularly lucky star. But maybe it's just me.
The writing is beautiful, don't get me wrong, and the pace of the novel suited me perfectly. I don't enjoy a book that has a murder every ten pages so I took delight in the slow tension rising across the chapters. Christine Mangan's talent and voice as a writer are powerful enough to create a world which is intoxicating - just as the real Marocco seems to get at times, with all its colours, scents and sounds - and which plays perfectly with Alice's story arc throughout the novel. Of all the characters, Alice is the one I like best, in terms of development and everything that comes with it, for she is complete and, at least, for me has very few questions left. The other characters left me wondering and, as I mentioned before, left me frustrated.
One mention I have to add to this review: the narration is superb! It's been quite a pleasure to listen to this audiobook, for every word and every sentence is uttered with so much elegance that kept me desiring to listen to more and more. I will definitely be looking for more audiobooks read by these narrators.

Historia

My first Jodi Picoult novel
Revisado: 03-06-18
What made the experience of listening to Leaving Time the most enjoyable?
I bought Leaving Time just because I wanted to try something new and because I love elephants. Except for Elena Ferrante and J.K.Rowling, I have a difficult time finding an author or a story that I love (I'm excluding from this conversation the classics, whom I adore). I did not know what to expect. But it turned out to be such a lovely, tear-jerking story. I cried so hard at the end, I cannot remember when I did that last time. The ending is surprising, jaw-dropping and... . Hopefully, you will hear it for yourself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved Serenity Jones, possibly because I am fascinated with mediums; I do feel that Jodi Picoult has created an interesting character there. Surprising and witty.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this has been my first time, but it was highly enjoyable!
If you could rename Leaving Time, what would you call it?
The title is perfect as it is :)!

Maggie Gyllenhall is amazing! Long live Tolstoy!
Revisado: 03-02-18
What made the experience of listening to Anna Karenina the most enjoyable?
I must confess that I have bought the audiobook because of Maggie Gyllenhaal, expecting an amazing performance. And I was not wrong. In fact, I've spent audio-binging the 35 hours in just a couple of days and I consider the best time I could ever have had. I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance, I love the novel ( even more, so much more than before), I love everything connected with this audiobook!
What did you like best about this story?
I was familiar with Tolstoy's work beforehand, but this time, the reading - and I put it on my age now - seemed so much more intimate, magnificent, and relevant. Lev Tolstoy's observations on society, education, religion, spiritual enlightenment, women's role in society, double standard are still valid today and they will be for many more century to come (unfortunately, or fortunately depends how you see it).
Which scene was your favorite?
Every single chapter is my favourite chapter. Every single one.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Everything happens on an ordinary day."
