Excellent narration but too much of a downer. I don’t read fiction to get depressed.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mary to be better than the print version?

Yes, much better, because the best thing about this version is the superbly clear and passionate rendition of Anne Buelteman, the narrator. It is a difficult story to hear because the life of Mary Todd Lincoln is so relentlessly tragic that I almost put it away a couple of times, but what kept me listening was the beautiful, compassionate and intelligent performance of the narrator. Each character was vivid and Mrs. Lincoln, in particular, had great depth and sympathy.
It was wonderful to learn something about Mrs. Lincoln other than that "she was insane". It was a deeply moving story of her life. Well worth the listening.

If you’ve listened to books by Janis Cooke Newman before, how does this one compare?

This was my first.

Have you listened to any of Anne Buelteman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I have. I think this is her best, though I have always enjoyed her work. It is witty and detailed, as well as passionate.

If you could take any character from Mary out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Abe Lincoln, for obvious reasons. What a profound, kind and enigmatic man. Anne captures his "reedy voice" perfectly without making him unappealing.

Any additional comments?

My only criticism is that I wish the editor had done his job as well. The last two parts were not cleaned up, so the "pick ups" were left in. You feel like you're in the recording studio.

Would you try another book from Dan Brown and/or Paul Michael?

Not any more. I loved The Lost Symbol, but that is the only one of 4 books of his that I have really liked.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Cut out all the redundancies. Dan Brown is a master of stating the obvious. He repeats the same thing over and over and I always figure out his puzzles or mysteries or bad guys at least 3 pages before he discloses them. That is irritating. His plots and symbols can be very interesting which is why I kept reading them, but now I'm seeing the pattern. He's just not a good moment to moment writer. Except for The Lost Symbol. That is by far his best, I think.

Which character – as performed by Paul Michael – was your favorite?

Susan and David.

Could you see Digital Fortress being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It would probably be better as a movie or tv show, because the writing's not that good. Maybe Pierce Brosnan as Strathmore and Charlese Theron as Susan.

Any additional comments?

The plots in his novels are always better than the writing.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes! The reader. She is terrible. Next time hire a professional. This woman is clearly an amateur. BIG MISTAKE. This book wouldn't be bad if it weren't so difficult to listen to the reading!

What other book might you compare Maids of Misfortune: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery to and why?

Her Royal Spyness is similar. They both are Victorian period pieces, but the reader in Spyness is MUCH BETTER.

How could the performance have been better?

With a pro.

Did Maids of Misfortune: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery inspire you to do anything?

no.
