Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Eye opening tale
Revisado: 02-17-25
James was a loose retelling of Huckleberry Finn and his adventures with Jim, a slave, belonging to the woman Huck lives with. It really is an eye opening story of slave life. At every turn I am surprised and often horrified by the details of the life this person is living. I actually have never read a more scathing and bitter account of slave life. The true inhumanity and disregard for these people is spelled out in plain language and makes me feel so sorry that more people didn't see the reality of what was going on. The writing is superb. The story draws you along with exciting details and rich description. I loved this book and recommend it. This is a good story with a solid dose of information to help people understand more about our society.

Historia
Ordinary Wolves depicts a life different from what any of us has known: Inhuman cold, the taste of rancid salmon shared with shivering sled dogs, hunkering in a sod igloo while blizzards moan overhead. But this is the only world Cutuk Hawcley has ever known. Born and raised in the Arctic, he has learned to provide for himself by hunting, fishing, and trading. And yet, though he idolizes the indigenous hunters who have taught him how to survive, when he travels to the nearby Inupiaq village, he is jeered and pummeled by the native children for being white.

What I Needed
Revisado: 02-11-25
I was glad to read this book in these troubled times. It has the feeling of loss, hope and acceptance that I realize now, I need to look at these times through the same lens. Seth's words are magical and put together to paint the picture he is talking about. I live in Alaska and feel the same ache for the past that this book convays to me. I miss the simpler times and my long gone dog team. I can see that change is the only constant.

Historia
The invented history of the Western world is crumbling fast, Anishinaabe writer Patty Krawec says, but we can still honor the bonds between us. Settlers dominated and divided, but Indigenous peoples won't just send them all "home." Weaving her own story with the story of her ancestors and with the broader themes of creation, replacement, and disappearance, Krawec helps listeners see settler colonialism through the eyes of an Indigenous writer.

Eye-opening history
Revisado: 12-07-24
It was a compelling story of parts of history that have been left out, ignored and swept under the rug. I am encouraged that the path laid out here can lead to more understanding.

Historia
Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, is dismayed to find that many of the people he knows support presidential candidate Berzelius Windrip. The suspiciously fascist Windrip is offering to save the nation from sex, crime, welfare cheats, and a liberal press. But after Windrip wins the election, dissent soon becomes dangerous for Jessup. Windrip forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state.

The narrator paints a compelling picture.
Revisado: 09-01-24
The story is so disturbing and I think I was hoping for explanations or reasons why the general population went along with such disruptions of "the normal way" of doing things. The end painted the picture quite clearly and I'm left with my own judgement of why.

You know her voice. Now hear her story.
Audible has teamed up with Rolling Stone to produce an uncompromisingly honest Audible Original that honors the life and legacy of the incomparable Aretha Franklin. Aretha’s universal appeal was evident from the release of her first album at age 14 through her nearly 50 Top 40 hits. Yet this intimate biography reminds us that Aretha knew pain as much as she knew glory. It was the blues, residing deep within her soul, that gave way to a voice able to lift millions with a profound sense of freedom, self-worth, and undeniable talent to rise above sorrow.

This was a great insight into the life and career of the Queen of soul. It was somewhat disturbing to me to learn about all the trouble and heartache she endured throughout her life but it also showed her tenacity and will power. It's always interesting and eye opening to know the private lives of famous people. There were no music tracks on this recording and I feel it would have enhanced the story to hear the songs that the narrator talked about.

This was a rich textured story of a family living in a library. This was a childhood fantasy of mine and it was a good story to find out what that was like in real life. I appreciated the narration and would like to read more things by this author.
