Do you like The Gray Man?
Revisado: 05-26-24
Well then you'll feel right at home with Riker. Obviously the first similarity is the two series share the same narrator. Think of the main character here (Riker) as a Gray Man light - not quite as resourceful as Court Gentry, but just as capable. I've listened to the first two books of the series - really good stuff!

Historia
On takeoff from Denver during a winter blizzard, an airliner piloted by veteran Captain Marty Mitchell overruns a commuter plane from behind. Bizarrely, the fuselage of the smaller aircraft is tenuously wedged onto the wing of his Boeing 757, leading Mitchell to an impossible life-or-death choice. Mitchell’s decision will land the former military pilot in the crosshairs of a viciously ambitious district attorney determined to send him to prison for doing his job.

Although this audiobook felt heavily edited, it's a really, really great story. Almost anything written about the story would give it away - just know that if you are a John Nance fan this short story really doesn't disappoint.

Big fan of DeMille, but not this audiobook
Revisado: 12-19-22
I've been a Nelson DeMille fan since the 1990s and I've read every one of his books over the years. I've loved the John Corey series since Plum Island. This was the first audiobook of the Corey series I've listened to and I really didn't care for it. Corey to me used to be an old school hard nose who did things his way because he didn't put up with bs. This John Corey feels like a jerk. Just a dumb stupid guy so full of himself he can't see the forest for the trees. His treatment of women is straight out of the 1960s and the narrarator's style of delivery really doesn't help soften his misogeny. The book seems very off balance - a simple story with a lot of set up for a saw it coming a mile away conclusion. Maybe the book feels a lot more balanced but several times I wanted to stop the audiobook and walk away from the story.

Historia
Over the Atlantic in the dark of night, the electronic brain of Pangia Airlines Flight 10 quietly and without warning disconnects all the cockpit controls and reverses course on its own. The crew of the huge Airbus 330 at first senses nothing, the flight displays still showing them on course to New York. But with puzzled passengers reporting stars on the wrong side—not to mention armed fighters pulling alongside to force them to land—the confused pilots discover that Flight 10 is streaking back toward the hyper-volatile Middle East, and there is nothing they can do about it.

Very subtle link to a previous work by Nance
Revisado: 09-25-22
It's been years since I've "read" a John Nance book. This audio version was really well done. Lots of characters to keep track of but all in all a pretty good job by the author/narrarator. If you like Nance, you won't be disappointed (and if it's your first time listening to him, you'll probably like this book as well).

Revisado: 02-08-22
And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. For some listeners, this may be a great listen. The story itself is very, VERY female focused: female victim, female heroin, female savior, female to the rescue, female villain turned good (female) guy with just about every male in the book seen as an advisory. There are a lot of "thoughts" throughout the book, bogging it down with the story taking a long time to travel basically not so far. Would I recommend it? To my female friends, probably so. To my male friends, probably not. And again, that's not such a bad thing as I doubt my wife really wants to listen to my own collection of Gray Man audiobooks. =)

Really interesting story that will keep the listener entertained from start to finish. Well paced and just when you think you have an idea of where the book is going, the author throws in curve ball. Ray Porter is awesome as usual. Very good book that will make a great movie as well.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Pretty good story (but you need to pay attention)
Revisado: 06-02-21
Many people will compare Project Hail Mary to the Martian (and rightfully so). Without giving much away, the two books are somewhat similar in plot and main character development.
One of the things about Project Hail Mary is that it is a more technical book than The Martian. Andy Weir knows his stuff and hinges much of the plot on tech; but some of that tech is really complicated and not easy to follow.
Stick with the book - it's a great story with some interesting twists. If you're a fan of Ray Porter you won't be dissappointed.

I found the journal at work. Well, I don't know if you'd call it work, but that's where I found it. It's the lost journal of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors and visionaries ever. Before he died in 1943, he kept a notebook filled with spectacular claims and outrageous plans.

Older listeners probably won't like this
Revisado: 05-01-21
I was excited to listen to this as the description sounded interesting and the story quirky. The production however is very disappointing. The writer is also the narrorator and it is painfully obvious. For me, the performance is simply unprofessional as this sounds more like someone telling a story in a bar than reading a narrative. The performance is very, VERY conversational and at least for me, very annoying after just an hour. I only got through less than a third of the book before turning it off. The final nail in the coffin was the concept that the main character was narrating a series of emails he typed on his phone. HOURS AND HOURS OF EMAILS TYPED ON A PHONE. Nope. Very unrealistic. Apologies to the author as the story did sound interesting - may have worked for me as a physical book, but not as an audio production.

Good book but very long. Worth the money. Writer does a great job of juggling multiple storylines and multiple locations. Russians are a little hard to keep track of but everything comes together as the story progresses. One thing - narrarator likes to over emphasize some German and Russian terms - gets annoying after a bit.

John Grisham is a master, but this is his Edsel.
Revisado: 07-19-19
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS A SLIGHT SPOILER. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW, STOP READING NOW.
I have read/listened to every John Grisham novel since the 90s when I found everyone on the NYC subway reading The Firm. By far, THIS IS THE WORST GRISHAM NOVEL I HAVE COME ACROSS.
This is a 17 hour book that should have been about a four hour book. SPOILER ALERT: Nobody wins. What you think happened was close to what actually happened. There is a twist, but it's cruel. You'll be depressed once you get to the end.
Grisham usually has a protagonist in his novel that you root for. There's no one in the book worth rooting for. You think you know the good guys, but they're not. You think you know the bad guys; they still are, but not as bad as one would think once you get to the end.
This entire book left a sour taste in my mouth. I wanted to get to the end just to learn "the secret." I think Grisham was trying something new as most people do once they master their craft. As I said in my headline, this is his Edsel. It will be interesting to see how his next project is received. I will say this- I won't buy it until the reviews by regular folks start piling up.
