Over-entertaining
Revisado: 11-19-23
I listen to a lot of the Great Courses, this is the first one I couldn’t finish because of the presenter. I found John Medina‘s primary focus on entertaining presentation so distracting from the actual content that I ended up bowing out of the course. A shame, because the subject matter very much interests me, but the nuggets of memorable information between long drawn out and over-emphasized anecdotes were few. Cannot recommend this course.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Amazing Story, almost too unbelievable to be true
Revisado: 05-30-23
Exceptionally well written and read, this barely credible but completely true story is intensely moving. The staggering courage, tenacity and endurance (ironically the name of their ship) exhibited by these 28 men, led by Ernest Shackleton, who was a tower of strength and unwavering integrity, is a rare testament to the power of man‘s will to survive.

Bewegende Geschichte über Heimat und Heimatlosigkeit
Revisado: 05-18-23
Empfehlenswert!

Historia
The 25 years between the onset of the French Revolution in 1789 and the Bourbon Restoration after Napoleon in 1814 is an astonishing period in world history. This era shook the foundations of the old world and marked a permanent shift for politics, religion, and society - not just for France, but for all of Europe. An account of the events alone reads like something out of a thrilling novel.

Very comprehensive, informative, interesting, listenable
Revisado: 05-14-22
Prof. Desan ist extremely knowledgeable, yet anything but dry and boring. She presents the evolving events of the French Revolution and the successive Napoleonic Era very clearly, logically and though historically very complex, nonetheless in a way which is easily understood. Though I have done much reading on the subject in the past, this course definitely increased my knowledge and understanding especially of the impact, importance and relevance to succeeding history in Europe and the rest of the world. Highly recommended!

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Ken Albala is a great presenter of historical content, keeping what could be an overwhelming amount of facts vibrant, very interesting and comprehensible. His structurally well-developed threads of history are easy to follow; thus the listener finishes the audio course having gained a significant increase of knowledge, which goes beyond the more typical audio course experience of simply enjoying a few diverting lectures. Last but not least I very much enjoyed the professor’s rendition of various theme-based songs. All around very recommendable!
