Historia
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.

Thoughtful and worth more reads than one
Revisado: 06-22-21
I was looking for a novel as exciting as The Expanse series. This one was hard at first, but then something caught my attention so I went back to listen from the start. I still couldn’t follow main chunks of it, but the story and its narration carried me along to a very satisfying end. I look forward to listening to it again. Sorry I can’t recite details: I don’t know how to spell the proper names.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Renowned as much for her wit and satirical social commentary as for her stories of love and romance, Jane Austen remains unfailingly relevant and one of Britain’s best loved authors. In this Audible Original collection, an all-star list of narrators (Billie Piper, Claire Foy, Emma Thompson, Florence Pugh and Gugu Mbatha-Raw) capture Austen’s pin-sharp humour and tone in these dramatisations of her six beloved novels accompanied by a full cast.

Please give me an OFF button for the music!
Revisado: 01-09-21
I’m really sorry. I’m only partway through “Sense and Sensibility” and am ready to throw the book out the window, if the book was physical. There is background music that has nothing to do with the story; it has no purpose at all except to distract from the reading. I am gritting my teeth!

This is for the Audible format.
Gripping story, well told. Well developed characters, lots of science and also lots of human relationships that are not dramatic. The story is the drama. Nevertheless there are heartbreaking moments.
In the Audible format, the narrator is excellent.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to get lost in a long story with many details, who may learn that some pandemics are MUCH worse than others.

Historia
Simon Russell Beale stars in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of John le Carré's first novel, which introduced his most famous character, George Smiley. This dramatisation, set in London in the late 1950s, finds Smiley engaged in the humdrum job of security vetting. But when a Foreign Office civil servant commits suicide after an apparently unproblematic interview, Smiley is baffled. Refusing to believe that Fennan shot himself, Smiley decides to investigate.

All Smiley all the time
Revisado: 12-15-20
This is for the Audible format. The ensemble cast reads so beautifully. There are no sound effects other than a voice fading a little as a character walks to the end of a room. No footsteps, no traffic noise, no glasses clinking. The professional voices add so much to the short story, which is excellent to begin with. All Smiley, all the time. Well, except for a couple of solos by Mendel.

Good book
Revisado: 10-09-20
There are some odd silences between sections and/or paragraphs. If you know about them in advance then they won’t be alarming. “What, is it ending so soon? Is there a technical problem?”
In addition to Dr. Fauci, Mr. Specter gives us short lessons on prior pandemics, vaccines, and the nature of cells and their manipulation.
Ferrets play a part.
I recommend this book for all readers who prefer to listen. I also recommend it to school kids ages 8 and up.

Historia
Blending the piercing humor of Alexandra Kleeman and the jagged satire of Black Mirror, an audacious, eerily prescient debut novel that chronicles the rise and fall of a massive high-rise housing complex, and the lives it affected before - and after - its demise. Standing nearly 500 stories tall, Los Verticalés once bustled with life and excitement. Now this marvel of modern architecture and nontraditional urban planning has collapsed into a pile of rubble known as the Heap.

Worth reading if you like dystopia (I do)
Revisado: 01-11-20
Confusing at first, and then fascinating. When the action really starts, it keeps its energy to the very end. Denizens of the tower learn that if they report a problem, the solution is not what they expect, and their lives get worse. But they adjust to it, and isn't that just the way?

The Audible version is beautifully read. Thank you so much, Geotge Guidall. I did not read any of Ms. Le Guin's books till I was in my 30s (now 65), and this one was terrifying till its pleasing denouement. If you haven't read "The Left Hand of Darkness", make that one next.

The number one New York Times best-selling master of international intrigue takes readers into the bleeding-edge world of technological espionage in a propulsive thriller that feels chillingly real. Former chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service Adrian Weston is awoken in the middle of the night by a phone call from the prime minister. From A Fan
Revisado: 04-19-18
He may be full of himself, but Mr. Comey tells a good tale, makes good points, and reminds us of the LAW. He's not above some gossip, but let's us know when he is reporting facts or stopping from revealing classified information. I hope he lives a good long life in which he sees good values return as our way of life. Does that sound too lofty? I wish him health, wealth, and the pursuit of happiness.
