Historia
At the start of the 17th century, Paris was known for a few monuments, but it had not yet put its brand on urban space. Like many European cities, it was still emerging from its medieval past. But within a century, Paris would be transformed into the modern and mythic city we now know. Most people associate the signature characteristics of Paris with the 19th century. Joan DeJean demonstrates that the Parisian model for urban space was in fact invented two centuries earlier, when the first full design for the French capital was implemented.

I learned a lot... especially how Haussman's designing were possible piggy backed from earlier work during the 16th.. 17th century and so much more... Thank you

A Fairytale
Revisado: 05-09-22
As a structual engineer, I love this monument. I love even more learning how it was hated in its beginning and how this ugly duckling, according to some, turned into not only a beautiful swan, but a revenue producing golden goose (cash cow) as well. Never planned to be the symbol of France! Talking about Mr. Eiffel 🗼getting the last laugh!! 🤣🗼😂🗼🙄🗼😏🗼😁

Historia
Like so many others, David Lebovitz dreamed about living in Paris ever since he first visited the city in the 1980s. Finally, after a nearly two-decade career as a pastry chef and cookbook author, he moved to Paris to start a new life. Having crammed all his worldly belongings into three suitcases, he arrived, hopes high, at his new apartment in the lively Bastille neighborhood.

Amusing
Revisado: 03-26-22
I like how he expresses himself and laughs at his mistakes and adjustments. I laughed thru each story but as another reader commented David mentioned very little positives that he liked only that he adjusted to the quirks.
I am planning a trip but it is only for 15 days amd I will not see things or Parisians like a person moving there and doing normal daily living stuff... but as another reader pointed out...if I were moving there... I would be a little nervous if I believed it and the people were as horrible as he described them..
I actually liked the narrator!

I didn't like the ending... Wished the Rachel part had been first and had a more complete ending...I wouldn't recommend... to negative...all the characters felt inferior.... the whole story line was people talking to shrinks... Unfortunately not my type of pleasurable reading.

They say Paris is always a good idea.... You know what I say? Paris would be a much better idea if I spoke the dang language. I can't even board the metro to visit the Louvre without ending up at the Moulin Rouge, and let's not even mention how I'll ever make it through a day at my new office. Fortunately my company hooks me up with my own personal translator. Ooh la la. Or should I say bloody hell? Because he's charming, witty, and British, and he brings the city to life for me.

Nice Girl meets Boy Story
Revisado: 01-25-22
I was sad most of it because of the realry that the MAJORITY of women are NEGATIVE PEOPLE PLEASERS.... especially to men and forever trying to fit others ideals.
I could never have been friends with a "Hannah type".... trying to shake all that constant negativity from her. And the constant whining and fear!!!! Amazing I finished but I figured or hoped it would end better.
I think Leo had a lot of patience... I don't understand how but he did. She still ends up being somewhat fearful but after all it's only 7 months later!!!!

Interesting and helpful!
Revisado: 12-30-21
I loved the details of her personal interactioms and her very descriptive inner reactions.
I too am very cheerful, upbeat, loving, and very, very friendly. But I am realistic and realize I will run into people as a tourist or right at home who clesrly want you to understand they don't like you and have no intentions of being cordial. You just have to continue to treat them and everyone how you want to be treated.... with kindness.
In many countries I am never sure if people are openly mean because I am from the United States or because I clearly look African, very dark brown!
As I am planning on a trip to Paris, I appreciated her details of giving the arrondissments she was living in or visiting as well as street names... I followed her on my Paris street map!!! It made her story come alive for me.
What a patient, loving and positive daughter she had with her...which I am sure she raised both of them like that.
It takes time to find the "right" group of friends abroad or at home, the older you get.
I was impressed with the distances that she and her daughter covered every evening.... I sure hope I can manage hours upon hours walking through the different quartiers for 2 weeks! 🤔🙄
Lastly, Sonia, often when a divorce happens, not every woman will have the finances or a job they can do from anywhere... to go off and find themselves.... to separate themselves from all the memories of being a couple! That's ideal... to be somewhere where people will only know YOU and not you as a couple! I have been thru that....😔
I thank God I got away and started over as well.
Thanxxxxxx again for your transparency and taking many of us down that memory lane 😢🥶😪😃😂🤣

Historia
The French Revolution came about because of a long-held displeasure at how the rich lived. While the rich lived comfortably, the common people were forced to pay taxes too high for them to pay. And there was not enough food produced for them to eat. French peasants became so impoverished that visitors to France said many of them were as skinny as skeletons.

Only meant to give a very tiny understanding of what the revolution was mainly about and who a FEW of the main groups or individuals that were involved. Very, very brief but wets one's appetite to read more on this subject.
