I was surprised to find eloquent Bible passages which contrasted shockingly with passive acceptance and support for distressing
religious Confederate values and presented northern soldiers as vile sociopaths. It is clear that the author does not grasp the legal fact that the slave owning mConfederates were traitors - furthermore. while castigating Union soldiers’ vile behavior it would have been more balanced to report that when Confederate soldier asswipes caught runaway slaves they chortled while making it more difficult for slaves to flee again by, wait for it… cutting off their toes. Charming, huh?

Terrific multilayered plots and superbly developed characters. James addresses timely topics with intriguing twists. I just WISH that she would would not use the names Christ and Jesus as her characters’ curses - as well as holy shit - because some of her readers believe that only God is holy.

Rowling is one of the talented non-Christian contemporary thriller writers who view it as oh-so-chic to garnish their narratives with characters spewing the names “Christ,”
”God,” “bloody” and “Jesus” as curses.

I cannot help wondering why “Yahweh.” “Allah,” and “Buddha” are not spewed as curses by these way-too-cool authors - only Jesus’ name is treated in this way.

Now Rowling has joined those who have kicked it up a notch to give Jesus a middle name by, wait for it… a character spewing “Jesus F—-ing Christ” as a most charming modern curse.

I just wish sooo much that Sandra Brown would not have her characters use the names Christ, Jesu, bloody and God as curses. I am curious as to why Yahweh, Elohim, and Allah are not insulted in this way by contemporary secular thriller writers - it is only Jesus whom these authors gleefully degrade in this way - I do not mind admitting that this practice actually hurts when I come across them in my reading.

Excellent narration but the
main characters spend 70% of their time drinking, cursing,
and (with extreme vulgarity)
talking with their mouths full - yuck

Sandra Brown is a marvelous writer but she has joined contemporary thriller writers’ gleeful use of the names Christ, Jesus and God as their characters’ primary expressions of strong negative emotion, ie., curses.

I wonder why only Jesus’ name is used in this way - I have yet to see authors use Yahweh or Allah used as their characters’ curses and cannot help wondering why only Jesus is insulted in this way.

I’ve loved all of Eskens’ novels but THIS is my favorite - the topic is heartbreaking and breathtaking.

Excellent multilayered plot with well-developed characters - an intriguing mystery with philosophical insights regarding how retaining the burden of guilt can demonstrate a lack of faith - this insight has been a gift from Ms. Huber that I appreciate very much.

Dreadful minute details of multiple extended descriptions of torture…. Hard to understand how a sad-and-sorry author could enjoy imagining and then writing sick descriptions of victims enduring vile torture. My enjoyment of the novel was seriously diminished by having to fast-forward through the torture descriptions every ten minutes or so.
