Everything that Ann Leckie writes is fire and Andoa delivers her words beautifully. This is the space opera that I've been looking for my whole life.

Historia
The story of leptospirosis is chock full of variety. In terms of biology, any number of different Leptospira species and serovars can play a role in infection, and the resulting infection can run from asymptomatic to deadly. As for ecology, virtually any mammalian species can either act as an affected reservoir for the pathogens or fall victim to a deadly infection. The history of leptospirosis takes us across continents and through centuries, illustrating how changes in scientific thought and technology shaped our understanding of this and other zoonotic diseases. And the current status of ...

Historia
An audio essay from Matthew about how anti-trans ideology can so curdle the soul that an otherwise progressive eco-activist—Derrick Jensen of Deep Green Resistance—can blow up his entire career over it, disrupting the very thing he says he lives for, and destroying the movement he spent years building up.The story starts more than a decade ago, but comes to its peak absurdity, for Matthew at least, on Facebook. He posted some thoughts about Jordan Peterson freaking out over that woman on the cover of Sports Illustrated. And then Jensen visited his page. Show NotesThe New Age / Medieval ...

Derrick Jensen, Jordan Peterson, and TERFs, oh my!
Revisado: 06-13-22
I read one of Jensen's books many years ago and was greatly moved by his compassion and prose. I'm really disappointed to hear about the turn that he's made towards anti-trans bigotry. While I don't think that one's social media clout is the best determinant of intellectual validity, it is telling that yes, the younger generations haven't heard of him.

Historia
Some of the only truly feral cattle in the world wander a long-abandoned island off the northernmost tip of Scotland. A variety of wildlife not seen in many lifetimes has rebounded on the irradiated grounds of Chernobyl. A lush forest supports thousands of species that are extinct or endangered everywhere else on earth in the Korean peninsula's narrow DMZ.

Historia
One of the leading physicists of her generation, Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is also one of fewer than one hundred Black American women to earn a PhD from a department of physics. Her vision of the cosmos is vibrant, buoyantly nontraditional, and grounded in Black and queer feminist lineages. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein urges us to recognize how science, like most fields, is rife with racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. She lays out a bold new approach to science and society, beginning with the belief that we all have a fundamental right to know and love the night sky.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Two scientists who support one another
Revisado: 01-13-20
This was an excellent portrayal of two woman scientists supporting each other, both scientifically and emotionally. Seeing the friendship of Dr. Ayrton and Dr. Curie develop in the midst of ridiculously overscandalized affair between Curie and Paul L. and onward through the fog of WWI is sublime.

Historia
The United States has always proved an inviting home for boosters, sharp dealers, and outright swindlers. Worship of entrepreneurial freedom has complicated the task of distinguishing aggressive salesmanship from unacceptable deceit, especially on the frontiers of innovation. At the same time, competitive pressures have often nudged respectable firms to embrace deception. As a result, fraud has been a key feature of American business since its beginnings.

Dry and tedious
Revisado: 04-22-19
I can't finish this book. I've read more than enough academic books in my life and career and I was looking more for a fun and informative book on the history of fraud. This book provides far more information on macro/micro-economics and the development of law and legal proceedings with respect to fraudulence. It's a rather dry and tedious read.
