A sensitive story, poignantly told
Revisado: 02-11-22
Joshua Henkin constructed a small screen slowly evolving medical tragedy on the frame of a love relationship surviving almost unscathed to the end. He gets the medical details, sadly, spot on, and the academia and the Upper West Side elements believable and not overplayed. Pru Steiner, the heroine, is a heroine, an Aysheis Chai’el of the old school regardless of her 21st C UMC trappings.
And compliments to the narrator, K Mazur, for her command of the intent and intonation of the passages in Hebrew.
High marks to all involved in Morningside Heights creation and this production.

Historia
Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human - just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined - but they’re not yet certain of what they mean to each other.

What a Fun ‘Read’!
Revisado: 10-13-21
Helene Wecker has woven together impressive knowledge of the early 20th C world with the engaging coming-of-age stories of her protagonists in turn of the century Manhattan and the premodern Near East. And to hear her tale spun out by George Guidell! A delightful sequel to The Golem and the Jinni.

Historia
For decades, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation, virtually untouched and unchanged. Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War, its residents enjoyed remarkable peace. It missed out on cars, and electricity, and the internet, and indoor plumbing. But when a marriage dispute spins out of control, the whole town comes crashing into the 21st century.

Annatevka, meet Brigadoon
Revisado: 04-12-21
The reading began a bit too cutesy for my taste, as if Max Gross was channeling his interior Sholom Aleichem. But once he got into the story itself, Gross engrossed me! As well as being an engaging saga of romance and revenge, of coming of age and modernity through an heroic quest, the book brings up an intriguing proposition: How would individuals, and society, deal with a newly discovered isolated population, almost completely oblivious to the contemporary world? Well done.
PS: Mr. Cohen, the Audible performer, did a credible job, thank you. But to my ear, his Polish pronunciation was better than his Yiddish!

Historia
According to polls conducted by Gallup and the Pew Research Forum on Religion & Public Life, the majority of Americans fail basic tests about religion, including tests on their own faith. This is troublesome because religious literacy is about so much more than naming deities or knowing the stories of ancient history. For many of us, religion is a way to examine and understand ourselves. These 24 enlightening lectures offer you the chance to experience the world's religions from all angles – historical, theological, and cultural.

Religious Cultural Literacy 101
Revisado: 02-25-21
Professor Berkson’s treatment of this crucial subject is exemplary. He is thorough, nonjudgmental, and very informative, attacking his topic with, if you will, good faith and good will. High marks and recommendation to the general reader interested in one of the major underpinning factors shaping the 21st C world.

Historia
The opening sentence of John Irving's breakout novel, The World According to Garp, signals the start of sexual violence, which becomes increasingly political. "Garp's mother, Jenny Fields, was arrested in Boston in 1942 for wounding a man in a movie theater." Jenny is an unmarried nurse; she becomes a single mom and a feminist leader, beloved but polarizing. Her son, Garp, is less beloved, but no less polarizing.

Being an author According to John Irving
Revisado: 02-24-21
Just like the book within this book, The World According to Garp, may b e known as John Irving’s “biggest book,” but I do not find it his greatest book. Though well written with strong views on gender roles, the feminist movement, and sexuality, the graphic descriptions and super titillating images create an ugly pronouncement on Garp’s world, which has difficulty being redeemed by the kinder, gentler perspectives in the story.

Wonderfully written, superbly read
Revisado: 02-12-21
Who would think that such a sensitive and compelling novel could be written about an orphanage and an apple orchard, with the lives and fates of a few individuals whose lives intertwine between them? With a deft and delicate hand, John Irving produced a sweetly poignant tale, seasoned with human tragedy, filled with understated authorial artistry. Highest marks. Wm R Greenfield MD

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

What a wonderful book, and what a wonderful performance!
Revisado: 12-31-20
My wife’s tastes in literature do not usually correspond to mine, so I was reluctant to accept her suggestion to listen to this. However, if I had been reading it, it would have been a page turner for me. Irving’s character development, style of narration, and interwoven mysteries meshed so well together that I hardly got anything else read while aurally engulfing this tale. And, it was “Talkin’ to my generation “, an added treat for those of us with a 50s childhood and 60s early adulthood.

Historia
Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, The Second World War. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on World War II.

A global relating of the global conflict
Revisado: 11-29-20
WW2 was global; A Beevor’s account of it favors it in scope and depth. He dispassionately covers the world from the Japanese invasion of China in the early 30’s to beyond VJ Day. Extremely well documented, extremely well laid out. Highest marks!
