Historia
Minnesota, 1977. For the teens of one close-knit community, summer means late-night swimming parties at the quarry, the county fair, and venturing into the tunnels beneath the city. But for two best friends, it’s not all fun and games. Heather and Brenda have a secret. Something they saw in the dark. Something they can’t forget. They’ve decided to never tell a soul. But their vow is tested when their friend disappears—the second girl to vanish in a week. And yet the authorities are reluctant to investigate.

Decent story about small town evil
Revisado: 12-11-22
Overall, the characters are interesting enough to care about, and though some of the plot developments are somewhat predictable, I wanted to see/hear exactly how it played out.
I wouldn’t say it’s great literature. It’s a middle of the road read, not dazzling but not awful.

Well below standard
Revisado: 10-31-22
I suppose you can explain the plot of this tale by John’s exit from Federal employment, and subsequently the improbability of his involvement in a terrorist plot. It seems maybe natural that his new foes are not on the level of the Lion or the Panther. But this novel suffers because of the small stakes. John has been built into a larger than life figure and this Corey story seems so small.
Ultimately, for me, it felt like an obligation fulfilled. Another John Corey book! A box that can be checked. But it felt tired, slow, and forced. Even if you are a die hard Corey fan, this book is completely missable. Save your money/credits.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

Definitely not for me
Revisado: 11-28-21
Is this book for you? Possibly.
Do you prefer to imagine the endings to books and movies?
Do you prefer to listen for hours and hours to drive home the point that history is sometimes made by flawed people in impossible situations?
Do you enjoy melodromatic interpersonal relationships?
If you can answer yes to all of those, then you may be in luck.
I wasn't expecting grand literature. I just needed a story and characters to be interested in, and to hear about how things turned out in this contrived epic disaster. So I guess it just isn't for me. I don't think it's actually terrible. Just disappointing.

Save your credit
Revisado: 10-12-20
I don't write a lot of reviews. Taste is subjective, and hating on someone else's work makes me feel grimy.
But for this title, I will make an exception, just to protect you. IF you want a book that reads like it was generated by a computer, this collection of predictable spy novel tropes is for you. Otherwise, save your credit and nine hours that you won't get back. You were warned!

Historia
It seems at first like a simple, tragic story. Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy, learns the awful news that his father, a soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Then the extraordinary happens: Tyler receives a communication from his father...after his supposed death. Tyler hires Sean and Michelle to solve the mystery surrounding his father. But their investigation quickly leads to deeper, more troubling questions. Could Tyler's father really still be alive? What was his true mission? Could Tyler be the next target? Sean and Michelle soon realize that they've stumbled on to something bigger and more treacherous than anyone could have imagined.

Disenchanted with this installment.
Revisado: 11-27-13
The narrator's performance was fine. Maybe a little over the top drama-wise, but I found it to be in keeping with the other Baldacci books to which I've listened.
At this point, I feel like I'm in a somewhat stale relationship with Mr. Baldacci and his work. Initially, I really enjoyed the King and Maxwell books. Now I'm wondering if Mr. Baldacci has changed, or if it is just me. I don't remember ever losing patience with a book like this before. In the last 90 minutes or so, I kept checking the time to see how much more I needed to endure. I found the plot to be too farfetched; there was just too much disbelief to be suspended. So I don't know if my expectations have changed, or if this installment in the series is worse than the others.
In summary, if you are invested in the lives of Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, you are going to want to give this a listen, just to satisfy your curiosity about the development and evolution of their relationship. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere.
