Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Worth it
Revisado: 11-06-22
This was a compelling story and well narrated. Really, the narrator was excellent. I generally prefer to read well-written books (as this one is) but decided to listen to this one since I’ve been driving a lot lately. It was a good decision. I had to skip past a few sections describing acts of cruelty in uncomfortable (for me) detail, but I’m guessing Follett thought they were important to include due to the historical setting. If you enjoyed Pillars, you’ll likely enjoy this one as well.

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Can’t abide the narrator
Revisado: 06-09-22
I’m actually sad to be writing this review. This book has been recommended to me by multiple people, and I’ve been looking forward to reading it. I have a road trip coming up so I decided to buy the Audible version. Unfortunately, I haven’t even been able to get through the first chapter and I’m quitting now, because I absolutely cannot stand the voice of the narrator. It’s actually the intonation that bothers me, not the voice itself. Her intonation sounds really snide and conversational in a conspiratorial way, like she’s conveying a specific personality in a novel. It’s enough to make me unable to continue listening. Looks like I’ll have to order the hardcopy and sacrifice that monthly credit, which brought me about 10 minutes of uncomfortable listening before calling it a bust. Hopefully it’s a good book, but I’ll be deciding that through reading rather than listening.

Great book
Revisado: 04-06-19
This is a great book. I would recommend it for therapists and for couples - especially couples in the earlier stages of marriage that are beginning to struggle. This information would and could (possibly) have been extremely helpful for my husband and I, if my husband had been interested in listening to it and discussing Real’s points. Might be too late for us in our particular situation (without counseling), but the book has still been valuable to me in terms of helping to think about our personal marital struggles in a broader context. Seems to me that Real is spot-on in his description and interpretation of the historical and sociological underpinnings of the difficult power dynamics that many heterosexual couples in the US face. Note my qualifiers though: this book doesn’t directly address every possible permutation of diversity in couples. To his credit, he doesn’t claim for it to apply to everyone in every situation (since very little psychosocial theory actually can, anyway). For the large slice of couples to whom his work applies (those in a culture strongly influenced by patriarchy and traditional gender roles, historically and currently), his insights are really applicable, compassionate and helpful. Highly recommended.

Four children separated by vast distances all undergo the same ritual, watched by cloaked strangers. Four flashes of light erupt, and from them emerge the unmistakable shapes of incredible beasts - a wolf, a leopard, a panda, a falcon. Suddenly the paths of these children - and the world - have been changed forever.

Engaging for adults and older kids
Revisado: 11-01-16
I bought this for my 7 year old son and I to listen to together, on the recommendation of an 11 year old friend. My 7 year old likes it, but I was captured by it even more. Reminds me of The Golden Compass series (which I loved) but not as dark and without the religious overtones - thus more appropriate for younger kids. Quite good really! I think I'll buy the next book for myself now, then re-listen to the rest of this with my boy at his pace.
