Historia
Dismissed by a bored author at a book signing, a betrayed young man named David Sedaris made a vow. Someday, when it was his turn at the table, he’d connect with his readers. The experience has been even more revealing than he’d hoped. In this hilarious and perceptive essay, the celebrated humorist reflects on the unusual patterns of forced socialization between author and audience, and the obligations and sometimes surprising returns of not-so-chance encounters with strangers: jokes, secrets, insights, and even charity.

Just trying to stay real and human
Revisado: 12-01-24
I related to Sedaris’ discomfort with published authors, before he too was published. And his account of the absurdity of fame and his attempts to retain his self in the face of the nonsense he suddenly faced as a “celebrity” was touching. It’s understandable that he was blown away by the woman at his reading whose bra story was so brazen and so relatable. Bravo to Sedaris for his honesty and accessibility.

Historia
Half a million dollars will be Celeste Thorne’s reward for spending four years of her life in total isolation. No faces. No voices. No way to leave. Since Celeste has never really worried about being alone, the generous paycheck she’ll receive for her participation in the solitary psychological experiment seems like easy money. When she finds an injured hiker in the woods bordering her living compound, her strictly governed world is thrown into disarray.

Historia
Lauren Voss has a nice, quiet, orderly life running her grandmother’s Heron Bay Resort on the Texas coast. Three years removed from a break-up that left her ex - and her life - behind in San Diego, she’s adjusted to the slow pace in Rockport, seeking out neither new friends nor lovers. Vandalism at the resort’s clubhouse - and a cryptic message written in blood - brings Detective Harley Shepherd, with her obnoxious Hawaiian shirts, into her life.

Historia
Chris McKenna gladly escaped the crowds of Yosemite to work as the new search and rescue in tiny Sierra City, nestled just west of Lake Tahoe. A loner by nature, she didn't mind the seclusion of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Jessie Stone, a successful but reclusive writer, is haunted by memories of her childhood and finally returns to Sierra City after 16 years to confront her past.... Can the odd assortment of residents of this small mountain town bring the two of them together?

Realistic and likeable lesbian characters
Revisado: 12-13-23
Gerri Hill writes great dialogue and knows how to make you care about her characters. It’s also a pleasure to read or listen to stories set in places most of us only visit on vacation, and fun to meet the locals.
