Historia
It is 1985, in an Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant, faces into his busiest season. As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him—and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church. The long-awaited new work from the author of Foster, Small Things Like These is an unforgettable story of hope, quiet heroism and tenderness.

Magnificent

A beautifully written and excellently narrated story. Subtle and nuanced but incredibly powerful and moving.

Historia
With the age of voyages of discovery in the 15th century, the curtain of history slowly came down on the late Middle Ages. Portuguese and Spanish seafarers set out to remeasure the dimensions of the earth. Numerous spices and fruits, which we would hardly be able to do without today, found their way to Europe for the first time. Columbus discovered America in 1492 on his quest for India. Six years later, it was left to Vasco da Gama to travel through the sea route to India sought by Columbus on the eastern route around Africa.

Great book - odd narration
Revisado: 04-08-23
Zweig is a great writer. And it’s a great story.
Narrator is enthusiastic and obviously tries to animate the reading, perhaps a little too much, but he has very peculiar pronunciation of many words including place names. Almost seems like English is his second language.
Quays = ‘keys’ not ‘kways.’
Viceroy = ‘vice+roy’ not ‘visseroy.’
Panoply = ‘panoply’ not ‘panopoly’
Timorous… Mauritius … Malay …
This may seem petty, and it may not bother others, but i found it a distraction.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Absurdly contrived and overwritten but strangely compelling
Revisado: 09-10-19
This is an absurdly contrived story. AR has manifested a blunt force vindication of her own philosophies that lacks any subtlety or nuance. The villains are irredeemably despicable, the heroes are cast in the manner you’d expect in a Marvel comic.
Having said that, the story is strangely compelling and for all its flaws, I listened through to the (predictable) end. Partly due to a very good narration.
