Historia
At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

Good plot & story but ending is unsatisfactory
Revisado: 07-04-22
Liked this audiobook. Good plott, character development and overall story but in the end the characters did not seem to have the same indenuity and drive they exhibited during the previous chapters. The ending seems unnecessarily drawn out as a result.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Fascinating book. Covers the first year of Churchill’s term as PM. Wish the book was longer.

Historia
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

A tough but mesmerizing listen
Revisado: 08-19-19
A story based on the brutalization of young black boys at a juvenile detention “school” in Florida in the 60s. It’s a tough listen but the author gives voice to the complex series of internal compromises the boys make to simply survive, knowing their welfare is not particularly important to anyone within the school nor to southern society in general. You will come to understand how their experience robs them of the simple chance to “be normal.”

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Unnecessarily Drawn Out Story
Revisado: 04-08-19
Decent story, but drawn out too long by the author. Author equates delaying resolution and internal musings by the book narrator with suspense. The result is frustration and impatience with the end of the story.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

Riveting Story of Adventure
Revisado: 04-26-17
Riveting story that takes you through early years of Winston Churchhill, his interaction with English aristocracy and relentless ambition. This was a man who saw war or or its possibility solely as a vehicle for societal and political advancement, without regard for the costs inflicted on ordinary soldiers and affected civilians. He believed he was destined to be great man known for doing heroic things. and he was right.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Would you listen to Team of Rivals again? Why?
This was an entertaining book that takes a subject we all know and gives the reader a peak into the backgrounds & personalities of the players and their strategies to become president and later, a presidential cabinet. Could not get enough of it.

Too much filler and moves too slow
Revisado: 02-10-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, this book had too much filler: full quoting of bible verses, long pastoral sermons delivered word for word, full retelling of biblical stories and parables, full stanzas of hymns sung. No real need to do so, when a simple explanation of those events happening would suffice. I feel like I just watched half of a movie.
What could Quent Cordair have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Shorten it.
