The story is good but the narrator ruined it for me. Her style is choppy and her phrasing is disruptive and annoying. It doesn't flow smoothly at all.

The Narrator Makes or Breaks

I enjoyed the book, story-wise, but Ms. Farrell's narration ruined it. If she can't do an accent correctly then don't do it! She also needs to learn proper pronunciation of certain words as well. It was like finger nails down a chalkboard at times. I hope the authors do not use her in future novels!

I am hugely into the narrators of audio books and if the narrator does poorly then it effects the whole thing. The narrator of this book was irritating! I got so annoyed by her voice that I had to switch to reading the book instead. I think if the narrator had been better, the book would have held my interest.

The story is great and if I could I'd rate it higher, but the narrator really spoils the whole thing ! Her phrasing is jerky and awkward. It's very difficult to listen to and it gets irritating. The narrator has a pleasant voice but her reading needs to flow better. People don't speak with jerks and pauses! I have the kindle version and I'm going to finish the book reading it instead.

If you want Pendergast don’t buy this book!!

Very good, but.....

I have been a fan of these authors for years and just recently started getting all the audible versions. This newest book is great. A fascinating story that didn't disappoint but I wasn't too crazy about the narrator. Her rendition of the male characters was too forced. Then when Pendergast came on the scene, her rendition of him was awful! She couldn't seem to get a nice easy southern drawl for him. Instead her accent for the character was something between a British, American and I don't know what. It was very disappointing.

I have read all 6 books in the Jacobite series. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I like historical fiction and these books did not disappoint. Then I discovered that the first in the series was on Audible. Since it's been quite some time since I've read these books , I decided to listen to this one. The book takes on a whole new dimension. The narrators were great. Mr. Watt made Sir Anthony come alive as well as the other male characters. Ms. Landorr did the female characters just as well. I can listen to Scottish accents all day.
I am anxiously looking forward to the second book coming to Audible. Julia Brannan, you are one of my favorite authors!

I found this book difficult to get into. About a quarter of the way in, I read the reviews. Seems like people either really liked it or didn't . I decided to stick to it and I'm glad I did. It has interesting twists and kept me guessing all the way to the end and it ended the way I hoped! As for the "steamy" parts that some reviewers didn't like, I didn't think they are were bad at all. I thought the narrator did a pretty good job but she really didn't need to lower her voice so much for the male characters. I will definitely get more books by this author.
