Historia
Sold into slavery by her father and forsaken by the man she was supposed to marry, young Egyptian Kiya must serve a mistress who takes pleasure in her humiliation. When terrifying plagues strike Egypt, Kiya is in the middle of it all. Choosing to flee with the Hebrews, Kiya finds herself reliant on a strange God and drawn to a man who despises her people. With everything she's ever known swept away, and now facing the trials of the desert, will she turn back toward Egypt or surrender her life and her future to Yahweh?

Narrator will more than put you to sleep
Revisado: 03-01-23
This reader has beautiful diction; I want to like her narration. She also does have some ability to alternate voices. But it is incredibly monotone. She attempts to put emotion into her voice, but barely manages. I am not an audio learner, so I have to read a book before I can listen to it, or I won't be able to follow the story line. This book I'd read more than once when I purchased the audio version. It's a fantastic story, but the narration almost ruins the book for me.
Now, for the story. I have never read anything, fiction OR nonfiction that so well describes what life was like wandering in the desert. I had never thought about, for instance, the fact that most people probably never heard the voice of Moses; they would have gotten reports of what he said, but the vast horde of people would not have been close enough to hear him. I never really thought about tradesmen from other nomadic tribes coming to sell their wares to the Hebrews. And I definitely never wondered about the non-Hebrews in the group and how they were treated. Etc.
The storyline is captivating from the very beginning. The main character is Egyptian, not Hebrew. And one is immediately drawn into her plight. Lots of adventure, romance, history, and spiritual depth. The author is a wonderful writer. The only flaw that I can name is that occasionally she uses colloquialisms which take one out of the story because it's a bit jarring to hear modern slang.

Fabulous narration of a fabulous book!
Revisado: 07-20-20
I've listened to just enough audiobooks to know that many narrators are not truly up to the job. Katherine Kellgren is not only better than all I have listened to so far, but she even is capable of singing when there are songs. (Perhaps this is minor, but to me, it takes away something if a song is in the text and the lyrics are just spoken). Her voices and intonations are all perfect. She reads ahead, unlike a number of narrators, so she knows how to speak a line before the text indicates what emotion, etc, is needed.
This story is one of Kristen Heitzmann's best, filled with the mystery and faithfulness of God. Her novel contains excellent characterizations, realistic faith conversations, and redemption fills the pages.

Historia
Jesse King doesn't want to go west, but her husband has never been all that concerned with what his wife wants. When tragedy strikes, Jesse is rescued by the Lakota Sioux, among whom she finds unexpected peace, a sense of belonging, and the love of a lifetime. A compelling tale of one woman's extraordinary faith as God leads her from prairie schooner to tepee, from tepee to frontier fort, and on to a growing state capitol.

Great story, mediocre reading
Revisado: 04-25-20
I purchase audiobooks based on favorite books I have already read, so I'm always going to give a high rating to my purchased books. But I have to say that I did not feel that the audible version was much better than the computer-automated voice that comes with my kindle reader. Ms. Hanfield is quite monotone, and puts almost no emotion in her reading. I would return it if I could.
