if you're looking for the worst book of all time, this is it!
Revisado: 02-03-25
absolutely the most the vile, terrible thing ever written. just nonsensical drivel, and lots of it. just because he used a popular story as a base, the rest was just horrible, nonsense, and a true waste of time. my life is worse for having listened to this.

very interesting book. it's hard to believe that people out there like this exist, but apparently lots and lots do. makes you want to really lock your doors at night. thank goodness John Douglas helped create this science of profiling the Criminal Mind.

Historia
Eleven months after he was liberated from the Nazi concentration camps, Viktor E. Frankl held a series of public lectures in Vienna. The psychiatrist, who would soon become world famous, explained his central thoughts on meaning, resilience, and the importance of embracing life even in the face of great adversity. Published here for the very first time in English, Frankl's words resonate as strongly today as they did in 1946. He offers an insightful exploration of the maxim "Live as if you were living for the second time".

although short, the book is amazing and transformative.
Revisado: 06-20-24
just an amazing book. I had already read, man search for meaning before I had read this. even though this book is much shorter, it is superior to Man's Search for meaning. it repeats many of the more important parts from the former.
if I were to summarize the key message from this book, it is that meaning is extremely important in life, more important than mere happiness, which is fleeting and ethereal. the better question to ask is not what should I do that makes me happy, but what does life expect from me to produce meaning. this leads to a life of purpose, greater meaning, and contentment.

just an amazing book. I actually listened to it twice so that I could really understand it. it's a bit technical but it sort of has to be. it really explained a lot about deception that I never would have known otherwise. much of what we think we know about deception is just folktales. Professor Levine really approaches it with a scientific perspective. he unravels a lot of mysteries and makes this all understandable. it is really really eye-opening.

Timothy R. Levine’s Duped: Truth-Default Theory and the Social Science of Lying and Deception recounts a decades-long program of empirical research that culminates in a new theory of deception-truth-default theory. This theory holds that the content of incoming communication is typically and uncritically accepted as true, and most of the time, this is good. Truth-default allows humans to function socially.

Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

he came close to plagiarizing a few well-written books on detecting Liars, and the rest of the book he rambled. he opened up with a civil rights case and circled back to it, but it really had very little to do with the rest of the book.

Historia
The country doctor had come to 221B Baker Street, the famous lodgings of Sherlock Holmes, with an eerie tale---the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles, the devil-beast that haunted the lonely moors around the Baskervilles' ancestral home. The tale warned the descendants of that ancient family never to venture out on the moor "in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted."

Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of human welfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world's most powerful boardrooms to your local bar. It is human stupidity. Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat.
