Historia
In the near-future world of Drive A, people can sell up to 49 percent of themselves in IPOs to cover expenses like tuition, medical insurance and housing payments—all of which have become largely unaffordable for the middle and working classes. Cable Rostenfarm did so when he was twelve to escape a deteriorating, nightmarish public school system, and now works as an analyst for a human capital hedge fund, Navarium, that buys and short sells other people.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

The most Dave Grohly book ever written
Revisado: 11-10-21
I'm a big fan of Dave Grohl as musician and he puts off the cool-dork vibe about as well as anyone. But when I started listening to the book, stylistically, I thought it sounded a bit like something a precocious 8th grader might write. But then as I got deeper into it I realized how spot-on it was. This is him. A precocious 8th grade rocker dude. Dave lets him out to play and his inner-dude just has a good time. He's constantly amazed at the life he gets to live and that's totally Dave. Loved it. You rock Dave!

As I listened to this book I kept telling myself I’ve heard this before, but maybe not? Anyway I looked and there’s another version in my library called The Unexpected Gift of Joseph Bridgman. It’s a different narrator, but the same book. That’s why I gave it a three stars for story. I guess they do this since the other narrator was British, but don’t change the title please!!

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Who thinks about breath? I mean, sometimes when I can't breathe I may think about it, but this book opens my eyes to the power and importance of breathing the right way. It tells me why it is critical and gives me guidance on how to do it. Really fascinating and informative. A very engaging self-help guide.

Historia
Bubblegum is set in an alternate present-day world in which the internet does not exist and has never existed. Rather, a wholly different species of interactive technology - a "flesh-and-bone robot" called the Curio - has dominated both the market and the cultural imagination since the late 1980s. Belt Magnet, who as a boy in greater Chicago became one of the lucky first adopters of a Curio, is now writing his memoir, and through it we follow a singular man out of sync with the harsh realities of a world he feels alien to but must find a way to live in.

What did I just listen to?
Revisado: 05-01-20
I have 429 titles in my library, and there is nothing else even remotely like this book. The closest comparison for me would be some of the titles by Neal Stephensen. It's a long book, and for a while, I found it a bit annoying. The excruciating detail that the main character (named Belt Magnet of all things) goes into about virtually everything in his life, as well as exploring all other potential alternatives had he made a different decision about something and...well, it's kind of weird at first. But it serves the story, and being inside Belt's head is an interesting place to be. There's a lot to digest here, e.g., I may have to return to this review at a later date. Or maybe I'll just go smash my swing set.

Either I don't get it, or its just bad
Revisado: 11-25-19
I'm surprised I stayed with this book as long as I did. It was a bit like watching a train wreck in slow-motion and you just can't look away. I won't give away a whole bunch, as assume from the high ratings that it is getting that there are a lot of fans of this type of writing. Let me just say this: It is NOT "Contemporary Science Fiction" which is the sub-genre that I generally search for new books. There is nothing even remotely sci-fi about this book. I'm not sure how I would classify it. Horror, I guess? Badly written horror? The dialog is cringe inducing, the character development would bore an 8 year-old. About the only thing that partially redeems it is the narrator did an OK job with the action scenes. Otherwise, it really was just nonsensical. Ideas seemed to spring forth without any real need or explanation. Like I said, either I missed the point, or it's just bad.

Brown does it again!
Revisado: 09-27-19
It has to be tough to keep up the quality of the narrative for a long series, but Brown manages it. This is another outstanding contribution to what I personally think is the best science fiction/fantasy series of the last 5 years. I will sometimes put on the first few chapters of Red Rising just to hear Tim Gerard Reynolds set the stage for the epic adventures to come, If you haven't given this series a try, do yourself a favor and just try Red Rising. You will soon find yourself tearing through the rest of the series!
I was skeptical at first that some additional narrators were added this time around, but they did not disappoint. Each brought something new and intriguing to the story line. Great choices, great voices. Another great book!

Historia
Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Billy ain't all that odd!
Revisado: 09-27-19
First thing that annoyed me about this book was the non-stop backwoods accent. I thought it was a bit over the top. But the biggest disappointment is that there were no real surprises. Billy Todd as a character did everything you would expect him to do. There was virtually no humanity to the character. He was "perfect" for his time, with all the other characters continually singing his praises. It would have been much more interesting if he had at some point snapped and done something truly out of character, or at least revealed a bit of a dark side. But this book just stuck to the same old post-apocalyptic tropes:" Prepping, surviving, having to make the tough decisions and act as judge and jury, because you know, "we ain't got time for all that stuff..." Good versus evil in the wicked new world. Really bad bad guys, and really good good guys. Nothing in between.
About the only redeeming quality for me was some of the practical things that a group of people in this situation might have to do to deal with the challenges of daily existence. Some interesting takes on what it would mean if the infrastructure completely broke down. Otherwise, what started out as an interesting character study devolved into predictable, well-trodden ground. Billy isn't really that odd afterall.

Paxton never thought he’d be working for Cloud, the giant tech company that’s eaten much of the American economy. Much less that he’d be moving into one of the company’s sprawling live-work facilities. But compared to what’s left outside, Cloud’s bland chainstore life of gleaming entertainment halls, open-plan offices, and vast warehouses...well, it doesn’t seem so bad. It’s more than anyone else is offering.

One of the best listens I've had in a while!
Revisado: 09-03-19
I guess you would call this a dystopian tale. It takes you on a very twisted yet plausible journey. The characters are multidimensional, and there is no clear cut political message or bent to this story. Every time I thought I knew what the moral of the story was, it threw a curve at me. Well worth the credit. I hope Hart does not follow it up. I think it is a perfect stand alone novel.

The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. Can be a challenge to listen, but worth the effort
Revisado: 08-09-19
I say it's challenge because the writing is dense and intricate at times. It something that I normally would prefer to read, but it still pulled me in with a unique vision that brings up many intriguing questions, and points out how little we know about our forests and nature in general. Probably listen to this one multiple times. There;s much that I missed on the first time through.
