Historia
The Winternight Trilogy introduced an unforgettable heroine, Vasilisa Petrovna, a girl determined to forge her own path in a world that would rather lock her away. Her gifts and her courage have drawn the attention of Morozko, the winter-king, but it is too soon to know if this connection will prove a blessing or a curse. Now, Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers - and for someone to blame.

Best book of a great series!
Revisado: 08-02-23
Best book of a great series! The narrator was great if painfully slow, but 1.2x speed is perfect!

Terrible changes of character
Revisado: 03-14-19
The characters change so drastically from previous books that they are almost unrecognizable. They start making obviously terrible choices. Not going to finish.

Terribly boring
Revisado: 07-30-18
This book is so dispassionately boring. The main character has such an annoyingly naive "innocence" for so much of this book that I just couldn't stand her. There is no plot, no tension. DNF.

Historia
From the international best-selling author of the Broken Empire Trilogy comes the first in a brilliant new breakout fantasy series. A searing novel set in a brand-new world, this series follows a young girl who enters a convent where girls are selected to train in religion, combat, or magic. Nona is selected to learn combat and finds herself at the center of an epic battle for empire on the outer reaches of a dying universe.

Great book-ends with a mediocre middle.
Revisado: 07-09-18
What a hook on the first line of the book! Awesome start, pretty good end, and some good parts in the middle, but the whole package was a little lacking. The middle dragged. Nona, the main character, makes a lot of decisions that annoyed me, even though I understand she's only 8. Abbess Glass, extremely intelligent, forward-planning, and charismatic when we get to see her in action, goes off-screen after the first fourth of the book and seems to bury her head in the sand, and the book suffers for it.
Side-note, but I find it interesting Lawrence has the opposite problem I've seen with a lot of other writing, where a character is *described* (instead of shown) to be awesome, but when we actually see them in action, they don't live up to the hype. Abbess Glass, in contrast, is shown to be amazing from the very beginning, but is later described as making questionable decision that don't match her original characterization. I feel that she suffered for the plot, which was a poor decision.
Overall enjoyable, with some outstanding parts. Left me interested enough to read the next book in the series, which (good timing) was just released. I'm going to leave a separate review for "Grey Sister", but I've got to say that that book delivered on every promise of the first! "Red Sister" is worth reading on its own I think, but you may consider skipping it for the sequel, which includes a great summary at the beginning.
Huge props to the Heather O'Neill as the narrator, she really helped bring this world and its characters to life. However, there were some editing issues, with very obvious cuts between recording sessions.

Historia
Behind its walls, the Convent of Sweet Mercy has trained young girls to hone their skills for centuries. In Mystic Class, Novice Nona Grey has begun to learn the secrets of the universe. But so often even the deepest truths just make our choices harder. Before she leaves the convent, Nona must choose which order to dedicate herself to - and whether her path will lead to a life of prayer and service or one of the blade and the fist. All that stands between her and these choices are the pride of a thwarted assassin, the designs of a would-be empress wielding the Inquisition like a knife, and the vengeance of the empire's richest lord.

Amazing, much better then the first!
Revisado: 07-09-18
Wow, this book is incredible! Best fantasy I've read in at least the last 12 months. Completely overshadows "Red Sister" in my opinion, which was just 3/5 stars for me.
I loved Abbess Glass in "Red Sister" when we got to see her, and hated when she went off-screen and seemed to change completely. I'm happy to see that the original Abbess Glass is back in "Grey Sister", with her own chapters throughout the entire book!
Nona has grown up a little and stopped making quite as bad decision (although she still has a ways to go before I'd consider her decision-making to be "good"). But at least her stupidity has stopped annoying me, and I was much happier to follow her journey.
I'm happy that Clara, who I also found annoying to read about, is absent.
All of the characters in "Grey Sister" are amazing to read about.
Heather O'Neill as the narrator was once again amazing. The editing was also better in this audiobook compared to the first. The "Red Sister" audiobook had some obvious cuts between different recording sessions which are absent in the "Grey Sister" audiobook.
Amazing work, and can't believe I have to wait a year for the already-written third book!

Good book, awful narrator
Revisado: 11-30-15
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers: the narrator wrecks this book. She sounds like she is reading to a young child, and she gives the main character a lisp. What a train wreck. I am now reading this book on Kindle and it is very enjoyable.
